Owner description: Until 2006 this southern California canyon oasis property was a commercial trout farm and hatchery. It was added to Wilderness Preserve properties. The volume of water and oasis potential are matched only by the Agua Caliente Tribe's Palm Canyon Preserve. The vegetation in the Whitewater preserve is more mountain riparian. It is a natural treasure.

I have a condo in Palm Springs and had seen the Whitewater sign for years but never went. A friend of mine told me how wonderful it is so I went on New Years Eve. It was a gorgeous day and we hiked only about 2-3 miles. Criss crossing the river and enjoying the well marked trail. Pick up any litter you find and turn it in at the ranger station. They will give you free fish food so you can enjoy the various ponds by the station. A beautiful location and the staff is super friendly and helpful. Large picnic area with ample benches, etc.

“lovely contrast to all those palms”

Not a long drive from Palm Springs, a winding road takes you up to the ranger station, lovely picnic area, restrooms, and trout ponds - you can feed .the fish........
there's room to run around if you have little ones with you, and if you hike, there is a well marked trail over the wide rocky river bed which leads you to a junction with the Pacific Crest Trail. You don't have to hike to Canada - it's your choice - or you can do a shorter easy 'there and back' trail, or slightly longer loop.
If you just want to sit and eat your picnic, it's peaceful, restful, and beautiful.
