“Nice but bit overrated”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 17, 2012

Yes, it is a nice scenic drive with several places with a magnificent view ... but to be honest there are many places in the US southwest which would get much higher rating for me. You really need to get to the unpaved part (don't worry - no drama) of the Apache Trail to see the most enjoyable places. It is worth visiting if you are not on a stretch itinerary otherwise going to the Grand Canyon or Petrified Forest bit further north is a better investment of your time.

“Great Day!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2012

This is pretty much a whole day trip if you make a few stops here and there. The 22 mile unpaved section is great scenically. We did it in a small rented Hyundai and really had no trouble. Just took it easy. Actually going a little faster over some of the ribbed sections seemed to work better than real slow. We let our hotel know that we were going in case we got stuck out there. I'm not sure there is good cell phone reception throughout, but wouldn't be surprised if there wasn't. We did it on an October Monday and there were still some people to pass on the road, so it wasn't super isolated. Roosevelt Dam area at the junction of the paved and unpaved roads is beautiful too and don't miss Tonto National Monument if you are interested in some cliff-dwelling ruins (on eastern paved side).

“Amazing views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 14, 2012

We traveled the Apache Trail on a beautiful sunny day. It was just amazing. It is not for the faint of heart because for a significant portion of the trip you are on dirt/gravel road that is very rough and it is constant switchbacks and hairpin turns, but that said, the views are absolutely spectacular. The terrain changes constantly and it goes from rolling hills to craggy mountains, to lake country and rugged caves. Words cannot do it justice!!! Also, we ate in Tortilla Flats at the restaurant there. The food was great and so was the service. That is pretty much the end of the paved portion of the road until you get to Roosevelt Dam and Lake, then the paved road resumes. It was just wonderful. Just be aware that for 22 miles you will traveling at speeds of mostly 5 to 15 miles per hour and your car will get pretty dusty and if you have any suspension issues, don't do it. But if you can do it you will love it!

“A real adventure”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

This was a true day trip with all the excitement and beauty of Arizona. The day started out just wanting to go to Lake Apache but decided to go for it and do the whole trail. My husband and I just loved the drive. Can't wait to do it again.

“A Bit Of Everything”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

A museum. An old mission with Elvis memorabilia. A deserted Wild West mining town. A scenic drive down to a valley floor to find a great Mexican bar/restaurant. A tentative few miles down a dirt track to find overlooks across a mini Grand Canyon. All in all, well worth a lengthy drive down from Scottsdale.
