The Matanuska Glacier is great. Hicking on it is certainly nice... but going ice climbing is an outstanding experience you will remember! Go for it!!!
Be sure to call Mica Guides for your day trip! These guys are the experts and they'll get you the equipment you need, show you the basics, start you off slowly before moving to more challenging climbs if you are up for it. No worries if you've never done this before, if you are able to climb a ladder, you can do this!
Reese & Matt were the best guides we could have hoped for. Safety first. Great tips and coaching. Super friendly! What a great day with just spectacular views!

This Glacier is awesome. This was the first glacier I've ever walked/climbed on. It was great. Not like the cliff-type glaciers you see on a cruise. The glacier is on private property and for $20 you can walk right up to it and on it. They have a nice gift selection and clean bathrooms in the shop. It was truly such a unique experience. We were out there for a couple hours. Saw ice formations, rocks, caves. Dress warmly. Recommend crampons since you're walking on ice and watch out for the crevices that might be covered with snow. There are also picnic tables and porta-potty's. It's great to be on something that is millions of years old and the blue ice is fantastic. I would definitely go again and I'm definitely in love with glaciers now! Thanks Matanuska!

We took with my husband guided tour on Matanuska Glacier. We walk and climb on glacier for more than 2 hours, we saw lake, cave and had close-up view to beautiful ice formations. This glacier is possible walk alone, but I can really recommend to go there with the guide and use crampons, that allow to you go closely to nice formations.

The Matanuska Glacier is a great place to get up-close and personal with a glacier if you have never had that experience. It is not the spectacular, soaring cliffs of Glacier Bay but you can get out on the ice and see what a glacier is all about.

You can either visit the Matanuska Glacier Statue Park on the Glenn Highway. The State Park provide viewing of the glacier but you can't actually get to the ice. To do that, stop at the Matanuska Glacier Park a few miles down the road (at milepost marker 102) where, for a fee, you can drive out close to the end of the glacier and then walk the ice. Make sure and wear shoes that have good traction and can get wet and a little muddy although it isn't bad. You can safely go for a nice little hike but for a longer excursion you can pay for a guided tour which is highly recommended for more than the first quarter mile on the glacier itself. The road into the glacier is dirt and gravel so go slow but it is completely passable with a passenger car.

My son first took me to Matanuska Glacier last June, and I was in complete awe of it. Just an amazing place. It is off the beaten track a bit but well worth it. I like places where I can go and just explore on my own and this place lets you do this at your own risk or you can take the guided tours. For $20 it's well worth it. I have been back to Alaska 4 times now and no trip is complete without a trip to Matanuska. It is a trip for the physically fit, you can drive out to the face of the Glacier and then hike over the Glacier. It is an experience like no other. I love this place!!
