Booked with Thomas Cook, flights both ways were fine apart from the return entertainment in SPANISH, a complementary drink in no way compensates on a 9 hour 30 min flight.

.Weve been to Cuba 15 times to various resorts and this is by far the best hotel weve been to,the food was brill in the buffet & even better in the a la carte's but you dont need to bother with them. Our room was spacious with plenty of hanging & storage space (room 3526) & half way between the beach & lobby, ideal.

The shower was 'nt very powerful but ok & the bed was a bit too hard for my liking & the plastic undersheet made me sweat.

The grounds are pristine with no sign of litter & i saw guests pick up cups/straws on the beach out of respect for how clean it was.The beach was a bit cramped & the palapas(umbrellas) were too close together,it was half full at most during our 2 weeks so it would really be too cramped when full but there 's no room to expand because of the swamp(smelly if the winds in the wrong direction but mostly it was'nt) The snorkling is brill but its a pain having a tiny path at one end of the beach to get into/out of the sea through the rocks. The pool is being closed soon (july) for repainting so be aware, the beach could get a lot more crowded.Having toilets right on the baech was a big plus for this hotel too.

The staff were brilliant everywhere you went, not one of them offered me booze/cigars/coffee etc which made a nice change, i think the tips they get for their brilliant service means they don't have to.The lobby bar was really well stocked with tipples i've never seen in Cuba before & best of all it was bottled mixers not those vile wunderbar syrup/water mixers.Even the beach bar was well stocked and you could get a coffee at any bar or restaurant which pleased my wife. The beach & pool restaurants were both very good & saved a long walk to the buffet .

I know this hotel is £400/ £500 more than most of the other packages but you do get what you pay for & more & it is our 40th wedding anniversary, not sure i'd shell out another £800pp for the royal service though because we like our space.I did notice that the hotel shop prices are more expensive than the norm by about 4 cuc's per 1 litre bottle compared to airport prices.

Iknow its a lot but its worth it, no children trashing the pool tables or running riot, luxury & all 3 pool tables were immaculate & free DO IT BOOK NOW.

Room Tip: Blocks 34,35, 36 & 37 arehalf way between beach & lobby

Me and my wife recently enjoyed our honeymoon at the Paradisius and apart from one or two minor negatives really enjoyed our stay and hope one day to return. As honeymooners we were offered free use of the spa for a day (not treatments) where we discovered the nicest beach we have ever seen and you really felt you had discovered paradise. We were also treated to breakfast of our choice in our room on a morning of our choosing and a romantic "on the beach" evening meal. As mentioned this was offered to us as honeymooners but on the whole could not find fault with the resort or the staff who made us feel very welcome and were very helpful when needed. As a treat we up graded to the "Royal Service" for the last 3 days of our stay and the best way to describe it is the main resort is Thomas Cook 5 star but the Royal Service has got "Sandalls" written all over it!! If you want real peace and quiet in a luxurious 5 star plus setting with accomodation to match (outdoor shower & jacuzzi etc) and excellent service and good food, the Royal Service offers just that.
The only negatives which are worthy of note are that some of the rooms could do with upgrading in particular the bathrooms and the main pool is in need of a lick of paint here and there. Also, bearing in mind there was a world cup going on this year, one standard 32 inch TV in the resort disco doubling up as a fan park, left a lot to be desired!! Furthermore you are entitled to 4 visits a week to the 4 a la carte restaurants and the following day after our arrival we went to book these up only to be told were too late as they were already fully booked. This was not acceptable and following a word with the hotel rep and staff this was rectified and were able to book accordingly. As the hotel was less than half full during our visit only limited spaces were given to restaurant bookings but that really wasn't our problem. The resort must know in advance of arrival how many guests will be staying at any given time and plan accordingly. These are the only real issues we had and understand that some major work will be taking place next year which should make a difference but that said, we can't speak highly enough of the resort and hope to return one day.

Room Tip: Upgrade to Royal Service if finances allow!!

My girlfriend and I stayed in this resort from 20th March for two weeks and can only emphasize what the majority of other people say. From the moment we arrived we were blown away, greeted with champagne and a Cuban band. The hotel gardens are very beautiful and gardeners work long hours to maintain the beauty (we tipped these guys the most!), we stayed in a junior suite (requested a first floor wrap about balcony and got one) which was very spacious, huge bed and bathroom just what we needed. Maid service excellent and room cleaned every day along with mini-bar.
Excellent choice of restaurants, in order our favorite were 1)Japanese 2) Beach restaurant 3)Buffet 4)Med 5)French 6)Cuban
Both visits to the Japanese we were on the show table, cannot recommend this highly enough, great experience and very social, we made some great friends during our stay... several visits to the "disco bar" ensured we woke up with a sore head on a few days!! All the bars throughout the resort are very well stocked with ample choice. Our favorite barman was George at the pool who will remember your favorite drink and bring it to you. Hats off to Carlos (food and bev manager) who is very hands on, walking around the resort daily to ensure everyone is happy. The entertainment was very good (on 90% of the days), including water ballet, different types of dancing and singing. We visited the spa on one day, we negotiated the price of a massage down which my girlfriend had and this included entry for me to use the facilities for the day including hydro pool, jacuzzi, foot bath, quiet beach, sauna. She loved the massage, which was in a beautiful beach hut overlooking the sea.
I used the hotel gym a few times which was well air conditioned and towels provided. Activities were okay with pool volleyball being my highlight. The average age was about 40ish (I am late 20's), so not many are keen to join in the activities, largely the resort is quiet, however our first week certainly wasn't we met many couples who all liked to take advantage of the all inclusive pool bar. We met some great people and found it very easy to meet other couples around the resort.
Quick note about the onsite doctor, it costs 25 peso just to see him, so make sure you take medicines with you (eg painkillers, piriton). Unfortunately my partner had a reaction to the sun and she had to visit the doctor and for one strip of tablets the cost was 90 peso...and the 2nd week i picked up an ear infection another 90 peso, the doctors were extremely rude and would speak at you very aggressively(doubt they are part of PRDO staff) This left a sour taste in my mouth but didn't stop us from having fun.
We did 2 excursions during our stay, firstly the paradise island boat trip which was well about 7/10, unfortunately the weather wasn't kind. Nor was the coach journey to the harbor! It was well organised including a free bottle of rum, all inclusive drinks on the boat, superb lunch and a snorkel. Coming back was a bit of a nightmare as the captain told everyone the coach was ready to take everyone back to their resorts, however he was not, and we had to wait in the sweltering heat for an hour. The second trip we did was the dolphins which I cannot recommend highly enough (10/10!!), our first experience swimming with such wonderful animals is one I will never forget!! I was called up on stage during the show and managed to become part of one the tricks. Included complimentary bar.
Would definitely recommend this wonderful resort to all couples looking for a relaxing holiday

I wrote already a comment...but it did not appear. So, i begin again. It was our 5th visit to this wonderful ressort. We got married there and came back since every year.
The service is excellent, especially the staff, who are always the same, and this is highly appreciated. Examples, the incredible Odalys for wedding couples, Roberto at the beach restaurant, who never stop running for the best service of people. Daisy in charge of the pool restaurant, with great smile and so good service. The drinks of George in the pool and Manuel at the lobby bar. Great service of Lorenzo the manager and Carlos, the new guy from Spain. Both always in the field asking people if everything is ok.
BUT. There is a BUT. The ressort is not the same as it was in past years. More than half of people are returning guest...they will know what I am talking about. If the hotel wants to keep people coming back....some things should change. Examples
a) we arrived end May. The hotel was 50% occupied. So, not much people. Unfortunately, the hotel decided to reduce service to compensate, but prices for our 2 weeks...were the same. It wauuls impossible to choose restaurants, either the type of restaurant or time tonhave diner. In fact, most were closed, they opened one at each time...last year, with 80% occupancy, we never had problems to choose where and when to eat. At the cuban night (friday) no restaurant was open. Non acceptable. Since we complained, they offered us a free diner at the royal, great restaurant (5 stars). But, I prefer to have my normal restaurants as usual...
b) in the past, someone walked the beach offering drinks...no more of that, only one person at the beach bar. Less personnel for the hotel, but less service with equal rate for guests...
c) wines were horrible. Years ago, we had the choice between 3 or 4 wines. No, only one and not good. If you want to order a wine and to pay it...30 US the less expensive one. The same wines were half price last year...
d) no more live music in restaurants at diner...that was something great in previous years. Again, reducing service but equal rate.
e) no mojitos for 3 days at the lobby bar...the reason, no hierba buena...but a lot of hierba buena at the beach bar. Some alcohol were not longer available...fernet, Baileys, etc.

So, good ressort...but not so good as in the past. If the hotel wants to keep returning guest...it needs to keep the level...a new SPA ressort is coming very near very soon (guardalavaca)....

12 days of pure luxury. If you can afford the time away, do 12-14 days. 7 days is just to short to experience any location, especially this one. We've been all over the Caribbean and it's tough to beat this location.
24 hour room service including anything, I mean anything you wish. Bottle of Wine, Bottle of Champagne with your meal. It's yours for the asking--No extra charge. Staff is there for you---Always. Just a hint, that we found out through tripadvisor, was to ask for an upgraded room on the corner by the pool. We got what we asked for and loved our room.
Holguin is a gorgeous corner of the world. Mountains, Plantations, Lush Vegetation, Beaches you only dream of. Snorkeling is a must. Free from the resort. Swimming in the Ocean is wonderful. Put a snorkel mask on and the Ocean is another world especially at Paradisus Rio de Oro Amazing coral teeming with exotic fish and totally safe.
Experience the entire resort. Take a 2 Peso tour of the resort from the Outstanding spa to the Royal service executive section. Book your a la carte restaurants as soon as you get there and do try the Royal service restaurant. Truly a little piece of Heaven. If I had an hour with you, it still wouldn't be enough time to let you know how amazing this resort is. We took 422 pictures and we could have shared them with you but you need to experience this resort for yourself and even though you don't know me, trust me when I say You Will Not Be Disappointed. One last thing. Enjoy life off the resort. Ask George the Pool Bar Bartender to line up a day with his Father in Law (Walter) In his Very cool Jeep for a tour of the country side, visit a local artisan market, visit a farmers home and enjoy their local food then experience an amazing lunch at a restaurant on the Cuba coast away from the rest of the world. This day will put that final notch on your trip so you can say--My God I Am So Glad To Be Alive.

Room Tip: Corner suite, upgraded by the pool

Fantastic resort , we went on the Royal Service package Air Canada Vacations and it was well worth it. From the moment we arrive at the airport till the day we left we enjoyed every minute of it.

The service was great, the staff was friendly and dedicated, they look after every detail to make your stay memorable. Starting from the mayordomo, he looks after you by guiding an explaining all that is available to you, arranges all your bookings for the a la carte dinners, all special requests and makes sure that everything you need is taking care of. Also in the front desk there is always somebody to help you in in any way they can.

The staff at the restaurant were great, they went out of they way to serve you. Overall the food was very good, a la carte or buffet there was a good variety well prepared and the presentation was very good.

Our room exceeded expectations, it was very clean and every little detail was looked after. Great outdoor shower, jacuzzi, walk in closet, etc. Overall very comfortable room and friendly maids .

The service at the private beach and pool was great, from drinks, snacks, towel service. If you need it a ride any were within the resort all you have to do is call and you get picked up within minutes in a golf cart.

Paying extra for the Royal Service package is well worth it.

Thank to all the friendly and wonderful staff, we had a wonderful time and we can wait to go back .

Muchas gracias
