“Loved our Vacation”
Reviewed March 23, 2014

This was our first trip to Cuba and we loved it! The hotel was beautiful, the rooms were clean and well looked after. The hotel is a bit older, but we felt that it was well maintained.

The food was very good, with lots of selection at the buffet. The food was always fresh and delicious. The a la carte restaurants were good, but not outstanding. We preferred the buffet.

We really enjoyed the live music in the evenings. There was often live piano or violin to listen to while enjoying a drink before dinner.

One of the highlights for us was the kindness and helpfulness of the staff. Being looked after by helpful and pleasant staff made us feel completely comfortable and welcome. We did not hesitate to ask for anything and were happily accommodated each time.

Our first time in Cuba and the first all inclusive for a long time. We flew to Havana with Virgin- a very good flight -and transferred by internal flight ( an experience!) to Holguin. We stayed in Royal Service at this beautiful resort which, we felt, gave us the best of both worlds. The quiet luxury of the upper part of the hotel, the beautiful Infinity pool, the separate beach and marvellous restaurant and bar alongside the buzzy bar and entertainment of the main hotel. All very easy to get around on the constant open carts running between the two. The food was a high standard- Mediterranean, Japanese, Cuban and international restaurants with a buffet restaurant- fabulous fresh cooked fish or meat for lunch- and the lovely restaurant at Royal Service. The entertainment was surprisingly good-string quartets, wind instruments, opera singers, guitar players, violins etc were fabulous and the shows were fun, very jolly and energetic. You could do as much or little as you want; the hotel had activities running all day long. Don`t miss the horse riding- incredibly cheap about £7 for 2 hours on a very well trained horse- and take the horse and carriage to Guadalavaca for a lovely market and enjoy the ride as well. Eco and bird walks around the hotel are well worth your time (all free) and the situation between the Ocean and a Lagoon means there are fantastic birds to see. The staff are without exception the nicest I have ever met-friendly, happy and efficient. The room displays with the towels had us laughing every day. The whole holiday was an absolute joy.

Room Tip: Go for Royal Service if you can- the outside Balinese shower is a hoot!

When I was looking to book our holiday I found it very difficult to glean information about the scuba diving options at the PRDO so felt it would be worthwhile to have a specific review.
First off, the diving isn’t actually at the PRDO! The dive centre, run by Gaviota, is located at the Blau Costa Verde Hotel 9km up the road from the PRDO (I’ll come back to that later).
There are 2 dives a day and they are included in the all-inclusive package. To book a dive you have to go the kiosk near the main PRDO pool and put your name down, the first 10 on the list get to dive but don’t worry the most on the list when I was there in high season was 4!!
You can only book 1 day in advance.
You have the option of doing one or both dives, the first dive is a deeper dive to a max of 30m and the coach leaves the main PRDO lobby at 8.15am. If you only want to do the 2nd, shallower, dive (max20-22m) then the coach leaves at 10.15am.
The coach has pick-ups at 3 or 4 other hotels on the way.
I took my own kit so can’t comment on the rental gear. You kit up at the centre and have the “briefing” (this consisted of telling us the name of the dive site, “don’t go ahead of or deeper than me, tell me when you have 100 bar, tell me when you have 50 bar and do a 3min safety stop at 5m”). Dives are a maximum 45 minutes.
You then walk 20m to the shore, down a small ladder and into the sea, wade/swim to the back of the dive boat that is moored 10m away and climb the ladder into the boat, all whilst still kitted up. The same, but in reverse obviously, when you get back.
There are rinse tanks, showers, kit hanging areas and a changing room at the centre. They use 12L ali cylinders with both DIN and A clamp valves. They don’t have Nitrox.
The boat is a newish 7-8m fibreglass boat with twin 250 engines and has room for 15-18 people or a few more at a push, there’s an awning for shelter and a cooler with bottled water on board. All the dive sites are with 15-20 minutes of the centre and there are 2 or 3 within the bay that can usually still be done if the wind picks up.
In the main the hard corals have been bleached and are dead. There are some very impressive soft corals – whips, gorgonians, sea fans and some beautiful sponges. The fish life is not as prolific as I had expected and was a bit of a disappointment but then I am used to the Red Sea so may be a little spoilt.
The guides are not at all interested, don’t point out anything to the guests and basically swim in one direction for 20 minutes, or until someone indicates that they’re down to 100 bar if that comes first , and then turn around and swim back to the boat, do the safety stop and out. I was getting back on the boat on occasion with 120 bar left in the tank.
There is a bull shark dive that can be arranged at the dive centre (at a cost) at Santa Lucia, though the weather/tides weren’t in our favour so I didn’t get to go. Apparently it is a 3 hour drive to Santa Lucia then a 45 minute dive and 3 hour drive back. The PRDO manager has done the dive several times and absolutely raves about it 
The only downside is the return journey to the PRDO, you have to wait for everyone to be ready, then walk through the hotel to the lobby, then wait for the coach to turn up, then re visit the 3 or 4 other hotels to drop people off before finally getting back to the PRDO lobby. It regularly took an hour and on one occasion, I was ready to go at 12.25 and got back at 13.55 – it’s only 9km!
The workaround is to take the coach on the way there but then grab a taxi at the lobby on the way back. It’s only 12 pesos and takes less than 15 minutes.
If you want any other information please feel free to contact me.

This was our first trip to Cuba in 10 years, our first time in Holguin.

Resort: Fabulous!

The layout of this hotel is a nature lover's dream. Beautiful lush gardens surround all the buildings; it is laid out like a village. The resort is 15 years old, and is divided in two distinct areas, the Royal Service area and the Regular Service area. It caters to the 50 plus crowd, so it was very quiet which we really appreciated.

Room: above expectations

We stayed in a junior deluxe ocean view room in a bungalow in the Regular Service area which had a private terrace with a hammock in a 'back yard' overlooking the ocean. The room was a bit dated but very clean. We loved the outdoor shower. We had fresh towels and a stocked fridge every day. liked the day bed separating the sleeping area and the living room area. there were a good variety of tv channels available including CNN Intl, RDI from Quebec, and French,Italian, Spanish and German channels as well.

Food: Above expectations

The food in the buffet was very good. There was fresh guava, orange, pineapple, peach and tomato juice every morning. the omlettes were delicious.a good assortment of meats, fish and vegetables as well. The a la carte restaurants were also good, not exceptional. The beach restaurant very good.

The Beach: somewhat below expectations

The ocean was a beautiful turquoise as expected. We were disappointed with the beachfront. It has apparently receded in previous years due to the hurricanes, so the sunbathing area was bit limited. The beach umbrellas were way too close, i felt like i was seated in an airplane. but generally speaking, the sunbathers were really quiet. we were all there to relax! the beach chairs were good quality. The bathroom area at the beach very small, but usually clean.
You could snorkel very close to the beachfront, the fish would come out if you fed them breadcrumbs. it was lovely!!

Pool Area needs upgrading

We never stayed by the pool. so can't comment on the ambiance. the layout of the whole area was beautiful. The floor of the pool needs painting, visually it was an eyesore, but did not deter people from swimming in it. however, the whole area was extremely clean. no worries!!

Spa: beautiful from outside
we never went to the spa, so cannot comment on its condition.

Gym:met expectations

We did go to the spa which had all the major machines. all in good working order.
only negative: we had to wipe down the machines with dry towels which does not disinfect properly.

Entertainment: Above expectations

We enjoyed the evening shows, beautiful music and dancers, we even had two opera singers one night! beautiful voices!! I felt like i was in New York at Phantom!!

Service: Exceeded expectations

the service was very good. Everyone we encountered had an easy, friendly smile and our requests were responded to very quickly. no complaints whatsoever.! no haggling for tips!

This resort is really beautiful. If I compare it to the other resorts i have stayed at in Cancun and Riviera Maya I would give it a 4 and a half star. the only reason i would not give it a 5 star is due to the rundown look of the pool floor which is a visual negative and the crowded beach umbrella area. otherwise, this resort is just as if not better than other five stars in Cancun Mexico.

Ps,there is a lagoon area behind the hotel worth exploring. we did not do any excursions.

This Hotel is lovely, stayed Royal Service for one week, its perfect for people looking for peace and quite in a natural setting with wildlife and low key things to do.or nothing to do!
Our room was as expected, with everthing to hand ,ground floor garden room(I would suggest taking your own shampoo and shower gel,I did not and regreted it) The outside shower was so lovely with a little garden in it complete with little baby crabs, and so big we moved our patio chairs there in the morning to catch the early morning sun! To have a shower and look up at the stars just perfect. The staff at this Hotel really do work very hard, are always smiling and helpful and well trained,we have found Cuba to be like this where ever we have been.
There was a good feeling of security at this Hotel and I could have travelled here on my own and felt perfectly at ease. The butlers in Royal Service should have special praise, and the lovely beach staff at Royal Service Beach always ready to get your sun bed ready for you and offer a cooling drink,a little snack before taking your order for lunch.
We dined at Royal Service for breakfast and loved it,taking our evening meal there or in the Buffet down in the main Hotel,I must say I do not agree with comments about the Buffet not being very good we loved it ,always something tasty if you wanted to just help youselves(I am a salad lover and the choice was very good, the shrimps were huge, cold or freshly cooked for you.We did eat here one or two nights and the pancake lady who cooks in her little pan lovely fresh bananna and peach delights must be mentioned!Great choice of breads of every kind all freshly baked and very good.
This holiday was everthing we could have hoped for and more, shame about the flights with Thompson ,nothing short of terrible we upgraded flight ,when arriving at check in told our seats had been changed and we where in standard seating, not happy, then they changed us to what we had payed for but then changed our seat numbers twice after that, all very stressful.
Must mention the exellent Thompson Rep in our Hotel(he was Cuban I have to say) so very helpful and kind when we went to him to make sure Thompson had not messed up our flight home he was able to reasure us and told us our seat numbers the day before our flight home.(back row in premium, very near loo, trapped in my seat for the flight home dreadfull planning of seats )Sneezing all the way home from smells in the air!
We would love to go to this Hotel again, but would book direct with them and arrange our flights,Thompson exprience once again not good,Dream liner I guess after waiting so long to go on it was sad, seating plan if you are sitting anywhere not in a window seat dreadfull, food poor ,service not much better,(its a lot of money to upgrade and not good value for what you get)I guess they are taking everything to the wire with cost .Could not recommend Thompson for their service here in the UK .(Thompson are not travelling to Holguin next year guess there is not enought profit in it for them!)
To finish on a good note this Hotel which ever part you stay in is lovely, lots of English couples, and repeat costomers at that so that says it all!

Room Tip: Royal Service ,Cabana Room if you can push the boat out they looked like a mini villa and very priv...

For our eleventh trip to Cuba we decided to try the Paradisus Rio de Oro in Holguin. We left Ottawa (-27C) via Sunwing on 26 February and arrived in Holguin (30C) on time and were at the resort about 1.5 hrs later.
We had a glass of champagne while checking in and were in our room (standard junior suite) with our luggage within 20 mins. A bottle of dark rum and a fruit platter awaited us in the room. We had requested a ground floor room near the pool and that was what we were given. The room (in block 34) was one of the renovated ones so had a nice walk-in shower instead of a tub. The room was large, clean, had a 32” flat screen TV and everything worked. The king sized bed was very comfortable and had king sized pillows. The room came equipped with an iron and board, umbrella, safe, two housecoats, soaps, shampoo etc. Room service was included and available 24/7.
The grounds and landscaping were well maintained and beautiful. The beach was very nice, soft sand, wide, crystal clear turquoise water and lots of shade, although when busy it was quite crowded under the palapas. It was rocky at the PRDO end but we didn't need our beach shoes. The snorkeling was very good on days when it wasn't too windy. The beach restaurant had good food and live entertainment.
We spent much of our time around the pool and there was always loungers available although the prime locations were reserved early in the morning. The pool is slated for repairs and repainting this year and while not as bad as some reviews stated, it really does need sprucing up. Service at the pool bar was excellent. This resort actually has 12 oz plastic glasses for beer rather than the standard 6 oz ones. The staff at the pool restaurant are the best – fun, helpful and efficient. Food was very good also.
The Japanese a la carte was fun – be sure and get a show table. The buffet had a large selection of very good food. No line ups at the make-it-while-you-wait pasta, omelet, meat/fish and flaming dessert stations. The food at PRDO is certainly the best that we've had in Cuba.
Cuban bands played daily at the beach restaurant, once at the dinner buffet and occasionally early evening in the lobby.
All of the staff that we encountered were very friendly, efficient, helpful and spoke English. I'm sure that the quality of the staff is a major reason for so many repeat guests.
While we liked the child free, relaxed atmosphere I'm sure some people might find it too quiet. We're looking forward to returning again, hopefully next year.

Like many, we had been warned not to expect high quality food & accommodation in Cuban hotels but the Paradisus Rio de Oro certainly proved all our fears wrong. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left (including 3 days away in Havana), this resort exceeded our expectations in all aspects. We had two different rooms (junior suites) - pre & post-Havana - and previous comments regarding the bathrooms are true but neither room disappointed. The renovated rooms have walk-in wet rooms with 2 showers whereas the older bathrooms consist of a shower over the bath. The whole resort is kept immaculately clean & tidy, with great care taken by all members of staff who go about their work with a cheery "Hola" to passing guests! The food in the a-la-carte restaurants is excellent and although the buffet food in the main restuarant is sometimes a little lukewarm, there is a huge variety that should satisfy all diets/tastes. The main bar is open 24 hours a day & they even give you a smile serving cuba libres at 3 o'clock in the morning! The bar is well-stocked & has a comprehensive cocktail list. The quality of inclusive wines at dinner was surprisingly good too and the waitresses happily topped up our glasses throughout the meal. The beach is a beautiful stretch of golden sand with sunbeds & parasols readily available. Whilst this resort caters to all needs, we would recommend a trip to Havana (1 or 3 night trips are available) to enable you to fully appreciate the real Cuban culture & way of life. There are so many more places we wish to visit in the world but the Paradisus is high on the list of those we would like to return to. Fantastic holiday !

Room Tip: We would recommend 1st floor corner suites & in particular the ones already renovated such as 34...
