“Royal Service Exceptionally Good”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

ROOM: An enormous room-24ft X 16ft -balcony 16ft X10ft and a bathroom 16ft X 10ft with twin basins Jacuzzi bath and additionally an outside tiled shower. The bedroom was furnished with king size bed, Settee and armchairs. coffee table and a walk in clothes closet.. It exceeded our expectations

ROOM FACILITIES: The mini bar was replenished daily with beer and soft drinks and anything else was quickly provide (wine, spirits ice ) by the 24 hour butler service. The maid service was excellent from a cleaning viewpoint but there were obvious signs of the "3rd world country " when it came to systems. The coffee, sugar filters paper fill-ups were sometimes overlooked and there didn't seem to be any housekeeping supervision (wages are less than £1 a day ) but any shortcomings reported by the room telephone were dealt with within minutes.

RESTAURANTS: A good choice and the extra restaurant (exclusive to the Royal Service section)was delightful. Food beautifully presented and with a high staff to customer ratio.
Breakfast was either in Royal Service -extensive cold buffet with hot food cooked to order or the main buffet where the choice of food was enormous and included egg station, pancake station, and smoothy .There were 4 restaurants in the main resort. Opinions varied so comments must be subjective and therefore perhaps it is best to say they should all be tried.

BARS: A number of bars -all inclusive, and the service was 1st class in the whole resort. The Royal Service had no less than2 bars ,one inside and one poolside. The Royal Service pool barman was excellent and not only waited on each sunbed with drinks but also brought round fruit and canapés-as if we needed them !

POOLS: We didn't use the main pool but it seemed to be well-patronised and was also adjacent to the beach. The Royal Service pool was a3 tier infinity pool and was beautiful but unfortunately unheated. This was one of the small things that stopped this resort being" Excellent "and resulted in this facility being underused.

LOCATION: The Royal Service was on a hill-top situation with an easy walk down to the beach.
Golf carts were available at a moments notice for transport anywhere on the resort. There was only the small resort of Guadalavaca nearby with its beach and craft market. Taxis were always available at the hotel for only £3.50. We had a horse and buggy ride back complete with a tour of the resort for £6.50 . For trips further afield there were plenty of excursions but we hired a car and visited the provincial capital of Holguin ,and some of the rural villages.. Motoring is easy as most Cubans have only a horse or a cycle.

OVERALL: A great holiday at a lovely hotel with the most delightful staff.

TIPS: First of all, about tipping. The staff don't "work the crowd " for tips but a Peso (65p ) or a couple at bars or restaurants are appreciated. Another tip is to NOT expect everyone to have their act to-gether. WE arrived when no other travellers were at the airport but it still took over an hour to retrieve passengers luggage. There were 2 carousels and they couldn't decide which to use so they put a bit of luggage on each ! The result was seeing passengers rushing from one carousel to the other . Let's hope they never get 2 flights in to-gether !. SO in Cuba patience is obviously crucial .

Room Tip: Go for Royal Service if you can justify the extra cost

Just arrived back from the PRDO, this was our fourth visit and our third to the Royal Service and we were not disappointed, as usual the service is the best ever and all the staff are so friendly and cannot do enough for you, special thanks to Yohannys and all the girls in the Royal Service restaurant, Edgar on reception and Norma will stop and speak to you every day to see if everything is ok, also ALL the butlers are wonderful and will do their upmost to ensure that your stay is a memorable one, John at the pool bar kept us well watered (only not water), sorry I don’t know the ladies name that worked the bar and sometimes the pool area we referred to her as smiler and others referred to her as giggles as she was always laughing and smiling (you will know who it is).
Our room was always cleaned to a high standard and our cleaner remembered us from last time (sorry I don’t know your name but we stayed in room 9424); special thanks to Manuel the gardener appreciated the coconuts thanks.
Do try all the restaurants we loved the El Patio and the garlic shrimps in the Mediterranean are to die for.
On the down side (and nothing to do with the hotel) Tomas Cook airlines are diabolical, yes the aircraft was dirty and I don’t think the air con filters are cleaned enough but the stewardesses on our return flight had got faces like smacked bottoms and were quite rude, and as for the inflight meals please don’t bother they are appalling.

Room Tip: High floor is better.

Nothing more I can add to the current reviews - just fantastic - went only for a week and needed a longer stay!! Staff were brilliant and so friendly. Incredible value for money. Only small criticism was the size of the beautiful beach, an extra 50 mtrs or so would have been perfect.

December 12, 2013 - returning from a 7 day vacation. There is very little to add to all the positive and accurate comments posted already; most we would state ourselves. We read that the resort was great; and were hopeful that they were true and we were not disappointed. The greatest testament to the resort's surroundings and dedicated staff was the abundance of visitors that were obviously there before and were welcomed affectionately by the staff.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

I'd like to start by saying thank you to everyone at the resort for a wonderful vacation. This was our second visit to this resort and this year we brought my mother and stayed in Royal Service. The only negative thing I can say is that the main beach isn't nearly as nice as on our first trip due to hurricane Sandy last year. When we compared pictures it was hard to believe they were of the same beach. Since they did loose a lot of the beach what's left is a little more crowded but still nothing compared to other resorts, though it may be difficult to find shade during peak season. If your staying in RS that won't be an issue even thought the beach is small there's plenty of shade for the people there. There were a couple Cuban families with childern on the RS beach the one day but since all beaches in Cuba are public the resort has no control over this and complaining won't do any good. Telling the Cuban people they can't use the beach would be the equivalent to telling Canadians that they're no long allowed on Sauble beach, it's only for the tourists. If not seeing children on your vacation is a must then you'll have to find a different island to visit as there are no guarantees in Cuba. I only mention it so people won't be as suprised as some of the other guests were when they came down to the beach that day.

Some people don't feel Royal Service is worth the extra money and I won't argue with them but personally I feel the extra choices it gives you are well worth it. The amenities at the main resort are very good and I used most of them during our stay, but just having the option to go to another restaurant for breakfast, lunch and dinner, being able to enjoy some quiet time on the beach or by the pool make it worth it to me. Add to that the personalized service and amazing rooms and I don't think I could go back.

The food this year was even better than the last time we were there and ranged from very good to excellent. The white dinner at Los Helechos was amazing but maybe a little too rich for people who aren't used to it as my wife and mother did experience some discomfort during the night. Personally I could have gone back for seconds. We ate at all the a la cartes and would be hard pressed to say which we enjoyed the most. All were fantastic but the show to go along with dinner at the Japanese probably puts it at the top. Every dinner we had I would quite happily have paid at least $75 pp for at home with the white dinner was comparable to our last aniversary dinner (our once a year splurge) which was about $125 pp. This should let you know that I'm not eating at Michelin quality restaurants but do appreciate something a few steps up from McDonlads. Saying that if the cost of your last 7 dinners out is more than your paying to stay at this resort for a week you may not be happy with the food. Also if you don't like seafood you'll find your choices limited but otherwise you'll surely enjoy what this resort has to offer.

I'd like to finish by thanking a few people who made our holiday extra special. Hector and Augustus our buttlers who were there when we needed them and gone when we didn't. They both did a wonderful job of taking care of us while not being intrusive. The chambermaids who did such a wonderful job cleaning our rooms and coming up with new and creative towel art. Jon at the RS pool bar who recognized us from our last stay and Llenma (pronounced Jenma) in the RS lobby who did such a wonderful job taking care of my wife and mother. And especially to Norma who made sure everything was just right when we got there. Thank you all for making this our best vacation yet.

We visited the resort during the last week in November and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. We stayed in a junior suite and found the accommodation to be spacious, comfortable and very clean although the bathroom was due for a renovation. Food was very good - we went to all 4 restaurants (Cuban, Japanese, El Pario and Meditteranean) and enjoyed the food in all of them. The buffet was excellent and had a huge selection including a couple of raw food stations where a chef cooked your selections of meat or fish in front of you. We ate lunch at the beach restaurant nearly every day - there are a couple of beach barbecues which ring the changes and it is a truly lovely location. Staff throughout the resort are helpful, efficient, non-obtrusive and friendly - we had the impression that the whole resort was very well-run. The grounds are extensive and nicely kept with lots of nice walks. The pool is large with many places to sit and the water was a nice temperature evn in late November. We enjoyed walking on the beautiful beach which is about 1 km. long. It is narrower at the Paradisus end and consequently very crowded but the rest of the beach is lovely. I would recommend bringing insect repellant as I was bitten extensively, although my husband escaped totally. There was entertainment every night and we loved the water ballet one evening at the pool. All in all, a great resort.

Room Tip: There are 16 junior suites to a building - corner suites are more spacious.
