What can i say about this hotel............ Perfection.
We had never been to Cuba before and once we arrived at the Rio de Oro we were met by staff handing out cooled face towels, then champagne , we were seated while staff checked us in then we were taken to our rooms by a driver.
Rooms were lovely . There are safes in the room and all you need to do is put your own code in it . This was free of charge. Air con was also on all the time your card key was inserted in slot. Oh how we had fun with that card key.....took us a few days to get it work properly , only insert in slot to open door for a short while if the red light comes on you left it in to long as we found out more than once. Maid was excellent and always left us disigns out of our towels . We were in block 39 and its down the centre of the complex close to the main reception and restaurants and not to far from the pools and beach.
The complex was spotless all the time and all the staff from gardeners to waiting on staff were fantastic. Nothing was to much trouble for them and if you needed something they didn,t have they went and got it for you within minutes. They did not treat anybody any different if you tipped or not , we tipped most times as they deserved it.
All restaurants were fantastic from the buffet restaurant, it had a huge selection and could not fault it in any way. All the al la carte restaurants we visited were also excellent. Japanese one was brilliant , the chef cooked the main course in front of you explaining what he was using and making you laugh in the process. You were seated around a table of 8 which made you interact with other guests. You have to reserve the al la carte , there are 4 of them and you can visit every one once a week . All restauants insist on men wearing long trousers at night and we saw a few men being requested to change into them. It is mentioned in the information about the resort so we didn,t understand why men still tried to get in with cropped trousers on. Have read reviews that food in the buffet restaurant didn,t have much variety and didn,t change much .....well all i can say is this is false i found there to be a wide variety and it was always excellent , there are so many eating places you can not possibly have any complaints about the food. The beach and pool restaurants were just as nice as the others and their fried battered fish is a must to try. Stunning views from the beach restaurant.
Pool bar staff were excellent and enjoyed nothing more than making sure you have a drink when you have finished your last drink. The slushes with rum in are a must to try.
Pool/pool area is always clean , olny downside to this area is that other guests feel the need to reserve the shaded beds and loungers near to them, some of them are then left reserved all day and you not see the guests using them for hours, there are signs stating no reserving but they ignore these signs. There are plenty of sun loungers for everyone. We did witness 2 guests not only save the shaded bed but they also saved four loungers so they didn,t have to move them around to get the sun. This in our eyes was very inconsiderate and greedy. This did not in any way reflect badly on the hotel or staff as i don,t know what they can do to stop this from happening.
Do not be fooled by the clouds and wind as you can still get burnt and in fact you get burnt more if your not careful. We got burnt in areas we have never got burnt before and this happened to other guests also. Just remember sun screen even at cloudy times is a must.
The Spa Area is a must to go to , if you book a treatment you get to use all the other spa facilities all day including its own private beach. You can book treatments with Tamara. She is the most nicest person anyone can meet and she is so helpfull in every way. You must visit her , she is situated just before you go into the buffet restaurant . Because we left before lunch she had arranged for us to take a packed lunch to the airport with us, we didn,t ask she just arranged it off her own back for us. Everybody loves Tamara and when you meet her you will understand why they do. Do not get me wrong all the other staff are fantastic also, each and everyone of them, even our thomas cook Resort Rep was excellent also. He also helped us and never went a day without asking us if we were ok. He even saw us right through to our departure at the airport. I would even go as far as to say he has been the best holiday rep we have ever had.
Do not be shocked to see lizards, frogs/toads and even crabs around the complex......we saw quite a few on our walks around.
The morning of our departure our rep even asked the hotel manager to speak with us and he was very nice also and he believes happy helpfull staff are a must . They ask you to fill in a questionaire with any suggetions for improvement to which we said "how can you improve on perfection" and this hotel is perfection.
All in all a brilliant holiday was had by us, and i would recommend this hotel to everyone .

Room Tip: Higher corner suites have a bigger balcony.

We stayed at the PRDO for 2 weeks from the 20th March 2013. We booked through Thomas Cook and after reading the reviews on Trip Advisor decided to upgrade to Royal Service (book your upgrade when you arrive and not through your travel agent) We were not dissapointed! Upon arrival we were given hot flannels and champagne, not your normal checkin at all. They looked after our luggage and asked for our passports, we did not have to do a thing. We were then introduced to our butler who drove us to our room on a golf buggy. We had 3 butlers throughout the holiday, Raul, Yunior and Hector - all were amazing and could not do enough for us. All the hotel staff, gardeners, bar tenders, waitresses were all so friendly and always wanted to stop for a chat. The Royal Service pool was beautiful and John the bar tender was great. He was always topping up your drinks and bringing around trays of fruit skewers or freshly prepared sandwiches. The Royal Service Restaurant was our favourite for breakfast and it was amazing to sit out each morning so close to the ocean. We did visit the main pool but did not stay as it was too busy and no beds available. The main beach was really lovely but again we decided to stay on the Royal Service beach which was perfect. We loved the fact we could have our lunch delivered to us on the beach and we did do this a couple of times. We had a Royal Service Ocean View Bungalow and the views were just fabulous. We could not fault the room at all. The bed was the most comfortable I've ever slept in and the pillow menu was great! Fresh coffee was delivered to our room every morning at 7.30 and an ice bucket with drinks was delivered every evening at 5.30. If you opt for RS then try the In Room Spa Cleopatra Experience - they fill the jacuzzi in your room with amazing lotions and milks and fill it with flowers, they light candles and leave you champagne in an ice bucket, AMAZING! The outdoor shower is so refreshing and welcome after a long day on the beach. We went on a couple of the Thomas Cook trips and the reps were all brilliant, fluent in 4 different languages and could answer any question you asked of them. I would highly recommend the trip to Santiago de Cuba - some people were put off by the 3.5 hour drive but don't be as the views on the way are worth it! I could go on all day about how fantastic this hotel and the staff are! We are going to book next years holiday asap and will be returning to the PRDO Royal Service. I would also like to thank Norma for all her help with our booking and finding us the most perfect room as she promised she would.

We met some great people at the PRDO and hope to find them all there again next year!

Room Tip: If you can upgrade to Royal Service then i would recommend it. We are a couple in our 30's and wanted relaxation and definately found it here!

I was reading the comparison reviews on these two resorts in one of your forums. I was at both resorts last year, the Hideway in April and the Paradisus in September. We also visited the Sandals in Veredaro a couple of years ago. I would rate the Paradisus as the top destination in Cuba. This resort 's philosophy is that they want you to return and the service reflects this. I find the Cuban people at the east end of the island friendlier and more relaxed than either Veredaro or Cayo Santa Maria. The only criticismI would have for the Paradisus is that the rooms are a little dated, but as of my last visit updates were taking place. The compact nature a relatively small size is another feature that I like. The walk to the restaurants at the Hideway was a challenge and other guests agreed. Walking into the buffet at Paridisus compared to the Hideway is a visual pleasure. Service is always prompt and friendly. We have been going to Cuba for 25 years and have never been disappointed at the Paradisus. we are returning in May , so I will advise if things have changed.......cheers William O.

Room Tip: If you can afford it upgrade to a bungalow on the mountain side

We enjoyed a week in one of the junior suites, right beside where the daily merchants set up. Staff was incredible, very friendly, and the resort itself was very clean and well cared for. I wish we could have stayed a second week. Wonderful!!

Room Tip: Choose a room closer to the pool if you plan on using it. It is a bit of a walk if you are closer to the restaurants than the pool.

Spent a week here in March, lovely clean room and resort, clean towels and linen every day. Food was very good , lots of variety. Excellent staff. Very warm and friendly. Only issue was sun beds! Never got to sit on one as people reserved them from the early hours of morning despite signs saying not too, witnessed an argument about this , not what you need on holiday. Clientele a little older so not much going on for younger people, but would recommend this resort to anyone wanting a great relaxing holiday, definitely would return .
