This resort is exceptional. First of all, the service is first-rate. From the restaurant servers to the bellhops and gardeners, they are personable and helpful. We needed a room-change the first night, and they had us moved in no time, no questions asked. (Hint: ask for an upper floor room. Sometimes the lower floors have plumbing issues). All the restaurants were great, as the food is wonderful. For lunch, La Laguna by the pool was the best – thanks to all the fabulous servers and cooks!
The setting of this resort – the beaches, the gardens, and the whole environment – is outstanding. You really do feel as though you are in paradise. Check out the small beach by the spa – it is gorgeous, and is great for snorkeling.
The spa is worth mentioning. We had one rainy day, and so I booked spa services. For just one service – I had a Cleopatra bath – you had access to the whole spa all day, as did my spouse. It was gorgeous. Extra money, but worth it.
Our only partially negative experience was the day-trip to Santiago de Cuba, which was our choice. This is a decaying city of sad squalor and scary, desperate street people. We were expecting the old, beautiful Spanish city of legends. It is crumbling. It was shocking. If you want a dose of reality, you will receive it. Havana is far superior.
All in all, a wonderful resort; I would stick to the usual – catamarans, snorkeling, etc. I would go back. (This was our second visit). On our last day, we were talking with an Air Canada employee who had a group with him. He said, "Without a doubt, this is the best resort in Cuba!"

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor.

We had a two week holiday here in February. The best thing about this resort are the staff who we found to be friendly and helpful. This was our first experience of an all inclusive resort and we would recommend it.

Obviously the location and weather are fabulous. We enjoyed watching the birds and lizards. The gardens are beautifully kept and thanks to a few cloudy days we discovered the 'nursery' area of the garden with pretty butterflies to boot. We didn't venture from the resort and had a wonderfully relaxing time.

Although the rooms are showing their age, the bathrooms in particular, everywhere was perfectly clean. On the downside, we found it almost impossible to find shade on the beach so after the first couple of days we spent our days around the pool instead. We would have preferred to spend more of our time on the beach and hope that more umbrellas are provided in future.

All of the restaurants and bars were good. We especially liked La Laguna for lunch and El Patio for dinner. The red and sparkling wines were enjoyable and plentiful. The buffet restuarant waitresses were good fun and very attentive. Every member of staff that we saw had a friendly Hola for us which was lovely. Our rep, Janior, was also really friendly and a great help sorting out a room change for us. What an asset the resort staff are!

Obviously, we like it here! We like the food, the beach and number one the staff.
We have been to other resorts before we started coming here, but this one has everything we desire for
A relaxing no hassle stay. Most people you talk to have all been before. That tells you something. If you want a little newer and fancier then try the royal service, they look beautiful although we have not stayed overnight there.
We will be back again in 2014.
Thanks Paradisus, keep up the good work

Our first visit to this hotel, although have stayed at another Paradisus in Varadero, and have to say this hotel is wonderful. Staff, facilities, food, accommodation and location are all brilliant. Access around the resort is also very good.
Did the bird watching tour organised by the hotel - absolutely fascinating and led by a very experienced ornithologist. Horse and carriage trips from outside hotel are a must - into Gurdalavaca and also to the Plantation to see the real rural Cuba.
A la Carte restaurant Bohio is fabulous and in no way rushed as previously experienced in other resorts.
Only two criticisms in what can only be described as a fabulous two week holiday - no tonic for 6 days to go with the Tanqueray gin!! and a very unpleasant man taking a la carte restaurant bookings. Otherwise absolutely brilliant.

Room Tip: Stayed in two rooms - both really quiet.

The hotel let us down in a few ways, none of which were major issues but annoying rather than anything else but in no way did it affect our holiday.

We returned to this hotel for our 10th wedding anniversary and also my wife’s 40th birthday celebrations. We were at this hotel three years ago and really enjoyed it so much we asked our best man and his wife to come along and experience what we had on our first visit here.

We had emailed the hotel several weeks prior to our visit asking if we could have the same or a similar room for our time there and eventually received a reply asking for us to message them again 2 weeks before our arrival and they would see what they could do for us depending on availability, which we did .

On our arrival there was about fifty other guests also checking in and we waited our turn to be dealt with. A lady took our details and all four of us were taken to a seated area to fill in the forms for check in. It was then it all went really silly, it appeared that my wife and I were being checked into separate rooms, I was to be going with either my best man or his wife and my wife with the other. We had to intervene and that was sorted out and then the lady decided to swap the rooms around that we had been pre-allocated by the hotel. We went to our rooms by ourselves as there was a queue waiting for the luggage to be taken to your room and as we knew where we were going we decided to wheel our own luggage as it had already been a long day with all the travelling from the UK. We arrived at our room only to find it was not what we had hoped to get but were happy with it apart from the air conditioning did not work so we decided that we would try and get a change of room. We left it until the next day as we were all tired and just wanted to relax a little. A few minutes after getting into our room there was a knock at the door with a waiter handing us a bottle of rum and some fresh fruit, I asked what it was for and he said it was for returning guests, which we thought that’s a nice thought, we later found out that our best man and his wife also received the same , and also for the same reason. This was their first time to Cuba…. In the morning we went to reception to be told to return in the early afternoon and the room was changed for a similar room albeit not what we had hoped for, the room itself was nice but the view was not what we had asked the hotel for.

Now with us changing our room, for the remainder of our holiday whenever we had to deal with any extra payments such as champagne at speciality restaurants and the spa, the names on the bookings for these extras were for our best mans yet the room numbers were against our room number, this took a bit of sorting out, don’t get me wrong it was annoying but something the hotel should have fixed on the outset of our arrival. So all the confusion at the check in caused us some frustration and did disappoint us.

The room itself is very large with a huge bed in it, tv , safe etc the usual stuff that you get at hotels. There were two problems with our room which were down to the maids. During the duration of our two week stay not at any point did we have any Kleenex tissues for blowing your nose, the box was never replaced from a previous guest and for a few days at a time we found long black hairs in the bathroom area which lay there a few days at a time. Neither my wife nor I have long black hair. So we were not impressed with the cleanliness of the bathroom, everything else in the bathroom was clean so don’t take it we were not totally upset as we ourselves are not prudes but when you can clearly see that there are long black hairs on the floor for several days it should be dealt with.

The hotel grounds have a chalk and cheese feel about them, if you get deluxe junior suites where you have an outdoor shower and hammock at your disposal you can either be lucky or unlucky with what the view you get. Down one side of the hotel nearest the sea the grounds look as if there has been a forest fire and the vegetation has been ravaged by it. The side furthest away from the sea has nice green grass to spend time on. It’s a case of pot luck whatever the hotel allocates to you.

The restaurants which we tried were a mixed bag also. The buffet restaurant was best for us in the mornings as you could always get something to eat but at lunchtimes and in the evenings it was pretty repetitive. But what was more an issue was that the food was generally warm rather than hot. If you got hot food it was because it had just arrived from the kitchen but does not stay hot for too long. Getting a pot of tea was difficult in this restaurant depends where you are sitting. Best bet is to sit close to the waitresses serving areas as you can catch someone heading to and from it. The International restaurant El Patio was very good, lovely food with nice surroundings and the same can be said about Mediterraneo, the Mediterranean restaurant. The staff at the Mediterraneo were the best and it did feel they were there to make sure you enjoyed the experience rather than just going through the motions. The poolside restaurant La Laguna, well we had different levels of service here. On our first day we all decided to have food with fries and the quality of the fries three of us received was the scraps left over in the deep fat fryer whilst the last person in our company to receive their food they were cooked perfectly, this did not make for a good experience. Along with the speed of getting drinks which was very slow, well put it this was first impressions last and we never ate in that restaurant again. We did however have some drinks there over the holiday and depending who was working you either got prompt service by a happy smiling staff member or were basically ignored and left to wait. You could tell what level of service you would receive by which member of staff was working.

The bar at the beach was always quick and the staff there were excellent as were the staff who worked at the lobby bar which is open 24hrs a day. Staff at the pool bar were also excellent and were always giving you another drink before you finished the one that you had in front of you. Sun loungers at the poolside were plentiful, but that could be because on our second week it appeared to be quieter in the hotel, other reviews say that you have to get up early is incorrect, you can always get a lounger at 9am so no problems in that department. Evening entertainment in the hotel is of a typical Caribbean standard, some of it very good, some of it average, you can take it or leave it, it is at the lobby bar area on a stage , various musical and dance acts. There is a Music bar where they play western music with some video clips, we went there some nights just for a different venue to spend some time away from the busy lobby bar.

There is a small gazebo in the lobby area which has small snacks and sandwiches during the daytime and early evening and also they provided some on the day that we were up very early to fly to Havana, which was a nice touch.

We did several excursions whilst on holiday such as a horse and cart journey into Guardalavaca, swam with dolphins, catamaran trip and the two day overnight trip to Havana along with the Tropicana show. All of which have nothing to do with the hotel but if you do require more information about these just send a message and I can try and help with any questions that you may have.

Like I said at the start of this review there were just a few issues with the hotel nothing that did not put us off of the hotel but we feel that the hotel could address these and make it an experience like the one we had three years ago and it would put it back up there amongst one of our favourite hotels. Remember it is Cuban five star not US or European five star, but overall its not a bad hotel, we still enjoyed it and hope this helps.

Room Tip: We emailed the hotel directly asking for a similar room to the one we had before and got a reply say...

This is our third visit to this hotel. Previously years been in August and once for Christmas so nice to see the place at different times of the year. Pleased to say standards have been maintained. Rooms very spaceous, beds large and comfortable.Rooms kept spotless by maids.Fresh good quality towel each day and plenty of them. Fridge stocked daily with soft drinks and water. Tea and coffee renewed. Beds turned down with chocs and flowers each night if you wished. Gardens are beautifully kept with gardeners doing a superb job. Apartments are well spaced out. The setting of the complex means that you have a lovely quiet place so although well occupied you don't bump into people all the time. Food was excellent both in quality and quantity with the only exception being beef which can tend to be tough but hey oodles of other foods to select fom so no one could ever starve! Waitresses/waiters all very efficient, especially Lisbette at breakfast and George in the lobby bar. White wine was very good quality for an all inclusive. Didn't drink the red but other guests were very pleased with it. Staff as always very attentive, friendly. Lots of tipping going on, but as I stated on a previous review for this hotel, we never tip till the end and have received as good a service as people who have tipped throughout so tipping naturally is appreciated but does not create bias in the service received.
The odd thing this visit was the shades on the beach. We are beach not pool people and in the past there has been absolutely no problem finding a parasol. This visit all were taken by about 6.30am each day!! The hotel errected another 4 whilst we were there to help ease the problem but the beach is quite a small area and it will be a shame if it gets crowded out with too many parasols. Danneris and Gorje do a fantastic job supplying drinks for the beach area. They regularly patrol the beach serving drinks to you on your loungers ! Sea is beautifully clear. There are no flies. Couple of cloudy afternoons but they give you a chance to cool down! Saw over 19 different species of bird just around the beach and hotel area.Lots of curly tailed lizards and the gardeners brought us a large iguana they'd found in the grounds which was brilliant!
We like quiet holidays and have to say this hotel provides just that, a chance to chill out and enjoy a good two weeks of sun, sea and peace. It was also lovely to be greeted with fruit and rum in our room and an invite to a meal as returning guests and to be given extended use of our room on the day we left. So yet again an excellent stay in Cuba

Room Tip: We've been in three different locations and all have been good.
