“A little luxury in Cuba”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 15, 2013

We all liked this hotel for its warm welcome, excellent service, comfort, cleanliness, good food and location. It was hard to fault, but we were kept awake the first night by the drums beating in the park opposite. It was good to be in the town centre, but we missed having nowhere to sit outside the hotel (except the park opposite) and no pool - but you can't have everything.

We rented a car in Havana and did not have hotel reservations as we went around the Cuba. We arrived in Trinidad and were fortunate enough to find a room available for 2 nights. The service was outstanding and was the only hotel that truly deserved a 5 star rating. The property was spotless and beautifully maintained. And the fact that wifi was available free in the lobby and in our room was certainly an asset. Although the food in the dining was not outstanding it was acceptable and convenient.

Room Tip: The junior suite was outstanding and even though we faced the square it was quiet enough.

Supposedly the best hotel in Trinidad, it is really nice, overlooking the (not too impressive) park. We had one of the four junior suites (205) with the advantage of a spacious room and the disadvantage of having to put up with quite a bit of noise during the night. (All four of the junior suites face the park). The bed was a little too soft for my liking; the bathroom nice. There were two computers (free of charge) in the business centre, with incredibly slow internet. Breakfast buffet was plentiful, with good selection of cold dishes, fresh egg dishes and very attentive service. The first evening we only wanted to have a snack in the bar, and asked for a hot dog, it was terrible. The second night we had a sandwich, which was OK. Drinks were good, service excellent.

Room Tip: Junior suites are nice but very noisy

Dear Bobicsek

We are very grateful for your positive comments about our hotel on this site, and also, of course, for those that are not so favourable.
Outside is “the price we have to pay” for being located in the heart of a city as bustling as Trinidad. In terms of the quality of some food, the difficulties and irregularity of the supplies prevent us, at times, from reaching the levels of quality we would like to offer. As for the Internet connection there is nothing we can do to speed it up, for the reasons that I think you already know.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to our hotel or to any of our Iberostar resorts.

Yours sincerely

We arrived here after having driven from Havana and were, needless to say, a bit tired. How lovely to be greeted with a cooling drink and warm towels to soothe us. Our rooms were a delight with a good sized patio equipped with table and chairs. Despite overlooking the main square it was quiet at night and in the morning we enjoyed a good breakfast before setting out to explore the wonderful town of Trinidad.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the square have lovely views and are good for sunset pictures !

Right in the Centre - we choose a Junior Suite ( Room 204 ) which overlooked the main Square, This is really the only international hotel in the Town. You step back in time when you enter Trinidad -so to have a haven of modernity after long days was most welcome.
The rooms were large and clean and with good towels and accessories. the room had cable Tv and strong a/c . All rooms that face the Square suffer from direct sunlight most of the day and the noise of the life of the Square could be distracting if you are a light sleeper - especially at the weekends ,were people are chatting and drinking until 0500am .
Breakfast is a comprehensive buffet in an overly large restaurant/ dining room.
The staff are courteous - i needed a European/ Cuban adaptor - they didn't have , but the following day the desk produced this gigantic industrial step-up adaptor which did the job! WiFi codes are given out but the service didn't work and the 2 free PC's were only operational on odd occasions and then very very slow .

Room Tip: choose a jUNIOR suite for the extra space

Booked and paid for two nights back in November. Advised we were "double booked" 3 days before leaving for Cuba in February. Talking to other tourists in Havana (from Canada,Israel and Sweden) we found the same thing had happened to them. Also discovered the hotel is "double booked up to June), Apparently they see nothing wrong in accepting a later booking from US travel companies who are prepared to pay full rate.
This hotel is by far the best in Trinidad and in effect can let its rooms to the highest bidder.
Had a look in during our stay there and it certainly looked great but no consolation when you have been rehoused to am inferior hotel on the coast,

Room Tip: Pay the full rate

Dear Yorkshire Hatters

We do apppreciate your positive comments about our hotel, that you unfortunately have only be able to visit , despite having booked it a long time and have to be relocated to another hotel not being in that time rooms available.
In this regard allow me to assure you that the hotel does not practice "double booking", first by ethics and second because it is illegal and reason for severe sanctions.Let me explain how do we operate: We provide our partner travel agencies a quota of rooms at rates, and reservations deadlines established under contract and they sell these rooms to their customers. Since then the hotel islimited to providing the services that have been contracted.

It would have been a real pleasure to accommodate you inour hotel and we hope to satisfy you next time..

Sincerely

A very pleasant five-night stay at this hotel at the end of January/beginning of February, in spite of intermittent and persistent stomach problems which lasted for over a fortnight.

We had room 208 and a friend who travelled with us had room 210. These were lovely comfortable rooms on the top floor with excellent bathrooms. The maids did a wonderful job of cleaning and produced some hilarious bedspread art with the help of my husband's sunglasses as props. Thank you for making us laugh so much!

The rooms overlooked the square - good views but with quite a bit of noise sometimes lasting until three in the morning; we understand that this is "just Cuba" and it didn't trouble us too much.

The hotel lobby is very attractive and it's worth having a look at the display cases there which show little "bygones" from Cuba's past.

We found it extremely easy to explore Trinidad from the hotel - the cobbles can be a little hard on the feet, but there are many interesting small streets and beautifully painted houses in this town which warrant at least a day or two to see them all. Taxis are plentiful, as are the bicycle taxis, though the latter can be very bumpy on the cobbles.

There is an international clinic on the road to the station (about four blocks down from the hotel) which is very helpful for providing medication for foreign visitors in the event of health problems.

We found a wonderful cafe (Don Pepe) near the Plaza Mayor which serves great coffee in a shady courtyard, and two restaurants (Ananda and La Marinera) which we would particularly recommend. Trinidad is also a good place for shopping, with embroidery and lacework, jewellery, and palm leaf shopping bags - very sturdy and costing 1 CUC - for sale.

The hotel is great to use as a base for day trips - we did the Valle de Ingenios on the old train (which we didn't really enjoy), and also spent a day visiting Cienfuegos; this city is about an hour's drive away and is well worth a visit. Juan Carlos (who is at the Grand every morning about nine o'clock) will arrange all trips - a very nice man who found us a fantastic driver (Miguel) for the Cienfuegos trip. Miguel has excellent English and an encyclopedic knowledge of the area - we can thoroughly recommend him.

All in all, a great stay!

Room Tip: The suites below us had lovely terraces which would have been very pleasant in the afternoon sun. If...
