We can recommend this hostal without any hesitation and will definitely return if we should make another trip to Cuba. We arrived with a rental car: there is a private parking lot next to the hostal. To enter the historic center you have to tell the guards at the barrier that you are staying in the Casa Amatista and need to unload. The rooms are simple, but clean and comfortable. Breakfast and dinner are very good: José obviously enjoys cooking and spoiling his guests (portions are huge). There is really no reason to eat out in Trinidads restaurants.
But the best thing are the hosts, Hiraida and José. Throughout Cuba we did not encounter hosts that were equally attentive and open-hearted. Within days they make you feel as if you were a friend of the familiy.

A very nice colonial casa particular. The hosts Hiraida and Jose were very welcoming and friendly, always smiling. The room was large, with ensuite bathroom and comfortable beds and it really takes you back in time, which is exactly what I was looking for in a colonial house. The two terraces are also great places to spend time during morning or evening.
Great location, it's only a 7-10 minute walk from the bus station. It's even closer to Plaza Mayor, where most Trinidad attractions are.
You should definitely try the dinner, it's very varied and the portions are huge. I would do another to trip to Cuba and would certainly stay again at Hostal Amatista.

Very friendly family. not much English language. Very good breakfast at extra cost.
Clean rooms and reasonably comfortable beds.
About 15 mins from the bus station on very bumpy road and slightly up hill.

Room Tip: Get there early if you can. Only two rooms one larger than the other. Both ensuite

We spent 5 days at Hostal Amatista (Amythest) with Haraida, Jose and their family - this hostal is very well named because it is a precious gem in many ways. The house is a beautiful old colonial style with open patio gardens, including a rooftop garden. Our room was very large and included an ensuite bathroom - it was located at the front of the building overlooking a narrow cobble-stoned street and we were provided with a key to the house and our room. Our accomodations were very comfortable and provided us with privacy when we desired. This Casa is located very close to the main square and the bus station.

The atmosphere in the home was amazing - Haraida and Jose are wonderful hosts and are very warm, sincerely friendly, generous, and welcoming. They go out of their way to be helpful - we left Canada without our toothpaste (not a good idea when going to Cuba) - when we asked where we could buy some (after looking for a couple of days) Haraida explained that we could shop and shop and not find any. Then she asked us to wait one moment - Jose left the Casa and within 5 minutes we had a tube of toothpaste! They go about their daily chores singing and whistling and we enjoyed being a part of their family environment. They have two beautiful daughters, pet birds, a cat, and two little dogs, and the home is often visited by family and friends.

During our stay we ate breakfast every morning and had dinner at the Casa three evenings - the food was always fresh, and delicious. If there are any complaints it would only be that the amount and variety of choices offered is to the extreme. The meal costs were very economical and the food rivaled any meals we ate in restaurants during our trip - our favourite meal was lobster which was prepared in a creole sauce (my description) and was delicious and tender.

We would highly recommend this Casa to anyone, any age, including families (both rooms available have 2 beds). Thank you again to Haraida and Jose for a wonderful stay in your home and if we ever travel to Trinidad again we will definitely stay at Amatista!

I implore you to stay here -- you will not regret it!

Just a few of the numerous reasons to stay here:

Clean bathrooms (with soap and washcloths!!!)
Delicious (and cheap) meals
Free afternoon fruit juice (I had fresh pineapple and guava...a welcome treat)
Comfortable beds (by Cuban standards haha)
Incredibly friendly hosts (They even gave me a parting gift -- a domino set!)
Great location just a block away from the main Plaza and three blocks from the Viazul station
Wonderful outdoor patio

Thanks for a wonderful stay, and when I come back to Trinidad, I will definitely stay here!

We spent four days staying with Hiraida and José in Trinidad and I it was the best place we stayed in during our two weeks in Cuba. The rooms were spacious and clean, the food was amazing(and easily the best we had in Cuba!) and the location of the house was perfect in the center of the town. Hiraida och José were perfect hosts and we felt like part of the family. I would go further than just recommending Casa Amatista to other travelers and say that you just don't want to miss out on getting to know these lovely people if your're in Trinidad!
