“The Perfect Romantic Escape”
Reviewed March 31, 2013

My fiance and I stayed here Nov 2012 and a wonderful romantic weekend. The rooms and the whole house were beautiful and luxurious. There was easy access to lots of scenic walks and the many excellent vineyards of Waiheke. The summer lounge with its entire walls of glass facing out to the ocean was a particular favorite - a beautiful spot to watch the sunset with champagne and canapes! Peter & Fiona are very knowledgeable about the best local spots and attractions and were the perfect hosts. Peter took us on a fishing trip where we caught buckets of huge fresh Snapper and had a memorable experience! The food was top notch - always featuring fresh local ingredients. We particularly loved Peter's famous homemade smoked salmon. We will definitely be returning sometime soon!

We'd considered getting on a plane for some sandy shores or an active 'break' in the South Island, all we knew is that we wanted a place to breath deeply again and unwind.
How lucky did we feel as we arrived at Hei Matau? It was a weekend so far beyond our expectations. At our request for some extra pampering, Peter and Fiona had arranged a masseuse to arrive on the first afternoon - which was enjoyed outside on the deck but in the shade with the sound of the waves at the bottom of the garden enhancing the experience.
We were fed, boy were we fed with beautiful canapes freshly prepared by the skillful Fiona, accompanied by a well chosen wine. When we decided not to leave our peaceful paradise, Fiona and Peter prepared us a lunch (he'd popped out to the market for some beautiful fresh rolls and the paper), when we still decided not to leave and asked them to cancel our dinner booking, again we were served with some delicious canapes.
My highlights were, the peaceful and luxurious surroundings, the incredibly comfortable bed, fresh, crisp sheets, heavenly pillows, the well appointed and all inclusive fridge in the room, the lovely bathroom (loo with a view), the swimming pool and spa I used in the evening, the brand new magazines, the turn-down service in the evening, the view from the guest lounge and the many comfortable places to lie-down and chill out and the breakfasts and the private beach and the privacy and the sensation of all worries melting away!
We'd had beautiful weather for two of our three days and even though the weather changed on the third day I could imagine a cosy winter break there too - fire roaring and lots of lovely blankets to snuggle under.
After all of that, all I have to say is JUST GO AND STAY THERE!

What a place! we needed a girls getaway for a rare weekend away from the husbands and children and our hectic life and doing a search we found Hei Matau Lodge.A quick easy Internet booking then a friendly response from Peter at Hei Matau we were all sorted with confirmation and all our questions answered and itinerary sorted, we boarded the ferry from Auckland. We were picked up by Peter from the ferry on a gorgeous Waiheke day and we made our way to Hei Matau and we were not disappointed! This place is paradise! from the amazing position overlooking the ocean and private beach to the beautifully appointed rooms and living areas we knew our weekend would exceed our expectations! And it did! Peter and Fiona are the perfect hosts and we not only enjoyed the most amazing food they served up with local wine but their lovely relaxed and wonderful hospitality. This is an experience you will not forget on beautiful Waiheke island. There is nothing we would change about this place, it has everything, pure luxury at every turn but very welcoming and by the end of our weekend it was a struggle to leave!

We booked Hei Matau for two nights to celebrate our wedding anniversary and couldn't have been more impressed. We had been procrastinating about where to go and couldn't decide between a 5 star hotel in the CBD, or a weekend in the Bay of Islands or Coromandel. In the end we found Hei Matau on Waiheke and decided we could start relaxing the moment we stepped on the ferry and not after a long drive in traffic. After only making a booking the day before we arrived, Fiona and Peter couldn't have been more helpful.

Everything about our stay was seamless. Peter had dinner reservations booked for both evenings within an hour of confirming our reservation. The inclusion of transport to and from the ferry and to local restaurants made everything so easy and relaxed. The breakfast is incredible, every effort has been made including homemade muesli. After an energetic morning walk, there are so many great spaces to flick through the assortment of up to date magazines, read a book, swim or sunbathe. Then after enjoying a beautiful sunset over the harbour with a glass of wine in hand and Fiona's fantastic canapes you were whisked away for dinner.

We were very pleased we made the decision to stay at Hei Matau, a hotel could never compete with the attention to detail and effort Peter and Fiona go to.

Brian thank you for taking time out to review Hei Matau. It was that ferry ride as the start to a weekend that sold us on Waiheke- much more relaxing than having to drive for 1 to 3 hours to a beach house. We enjoyed having you and Lee here and hope you will return when you need a another weekend relaxer.

We booked Hei Matau with no idea of what was in store for us, as a bit of a last minute thing (6 year anniversary). Peter picked us up from the ferry terminal in the morning and let us loose to wander around the main shops for an early lunch and a bit of sightseeing while taking care of our luggage for us. Once we were all walked out, he picked us up and took us on a scenic route showcasing Waiheke's finest.

On arrival at Hei Matau we were completely blown away once the front gates opened. After settling in we were further blown away by Peter and Fiona's pampering! (warning, do not come here if you are on a diet as they will stuff you with delicious goodies!). Imagine a 5 star hotel, add a half star for an owner operator service and another half star for going beyond excellent service and you get Hei Matau!

This is the perfect place to get away from the kids, work, stress and just do absolutely nothing. Then once you get over that, Peter and Fiona have thought of everything. Go for a swim or spa, walk along a fantastically scenic coastal walkway, take the bikes or the kayaks for a spin, have a picnic, fishing, petanque ... all ready to go! (Did I mention they have their own private beach??).

Lastly, if you have never been to Waiheke before or have never stayed overnight, Peter's hands-on organization and chauffeur service is absolutely invaluable. We literally had no idea where to go or even how!

So, would we go back again? We're already listing out the things we must do on our next trip! Thanks Peter and Fiona for the fantastic R&R and for letting us into your beautiful home.

We recently used Hei Matau for a coporate Team Alignment Workshop. The venue offers several separate areas for chilling, presenting, dining and just chatting. We were able to hold our presentation/workshop and then make the most of the facilities (swim in the pool, dip in the spa) and stunning views. Peter and Fiona were amazing hosts and had certainly considered all our needs.

When looking for a weekend away to relax and destress and spend some quality time with my partner,I came across Hei Matua via Google.

The official website description said - When you stay at Hei Matau Lodge you are the pampered guest in a world class luxury beach house. Your experience will include the perfect combination of stunning sea views, casual luxury and genuine kiwi hospitality. Set in 7 ½ acres of grounds with extensive native planting, Hei Matau has direct beach access to a secluded bay.

The description does not do this exquisite lodge justice,Peter and Fiona are the perfect hosts, you can turn up and everything is provided. The food is first class with Fiona's and Peter's baking to die for.

You come home to a candle lite room, the views are divine and the lodge has a feeling of peacefulness and serenity. It always smells divine and makes you not want to go home !

We cant wait to return.

Room Tip: We stayed in the Kereru room which has a beautiful room but the entire lodge is superb. Furnishings...
