On a beautiful autumn afternoon, we thought we'd round off a day's sightseeing.
My partner and our friend had never flown from Dairy Flat before (I learned to fly here some decades earlier), so we popped in on the off-chance.
Normally, these things are set up in advance, but a quick call to the owner (Paul McSherry), and a custom-built treat was sorted.
Our pilot (James Smith) welcomed us most warmly - considering he'd just landed off what he thought was his last flight of the day - and we were airborne in moments.
James asked where we wanted to go, and created a perfect route for maximum enjoyment.
We all work in the industry - two of us are pilots - , and James' thoroughly professional approach was obvious from the start.
The aircraft (C172) was very well equipped, and a high point was the noise-cancelling headsets, which greatly simplified easy conversation and flight info from James
We headed east, down the Okura River, along the East Coast Bays (my, how they've changed!), to North Head - where we take overseas visitors for a last look at Auckland's views before they head home - around the city and Sky Tower, past our place, then back to 'The Flat'.
Spectacular and unforgettable views by the dozen.
Traffic was congested as we approached, so James gave us a few extra minutes' flight, over the Whangaparaoa Peninsula: excellent!
Many photos, and many more happy memories, are now being sorted and shared.
Thank you, Paul and James!
