We dropped in on the spur of the moment and were not disappointed. I am a Coeliac and discussed the menu at length with the chef Juliarna Kavanagh who was so accommodating to me. Our food was wonderful and the service was very good and unobtrusive. We will go again next time we do an overnight stop in Picton.
Thanks again Juliearna.

In escape to picton I got a nice atmosphere and the food was really good, especially the dessert, the ,,Escape to Picton" is a must to try when you are eating there!! They have a nice big TV on a wall and a lovelky jukebox with where you can pick for one dollar a song out of thousands! Also there is a cozy, spacious area outside with heaters and a big pooltable!! On some evenings they have somebody playing outside, with a guitar, which is amazing!!
Escape to Picton is definitely worth a visit while you are in Picton!

Went tonight to Escape to Picton but it would have been better to escape this restaurant.. We arrived at haf past six in a nearly empty restaurant. When i was ready to order i found out that the cod wasn't available...

We had to wait for an hour for our mains.. (with only six other guests).

We were in picton for the day and decided to stay for dinner. Following the tripadvisor reviews we thought we give this restaurant a go. Upon entering we were imnmediately seated at a table despite not having a booking. Considering it was 7pm on a sat we thought it was our lucky day. However after the waitress had set up glasses and cutlery etc around us she brought the menue stating that two of the four mains weren't available tonight. Leaving a choice of fish curry or Salmon and mash. Not feeling like any of the fish dishes on offer we decided to give escape to picton a miss this time leaving puzzled over a few things. First of all why wouldn't you have your tables all nicely set up for dinner on a Saturday which creates a much nicer and inviting restaurant dining atmosphere than bare tables like a pub. Secondly we couldn't help but noticed the cheap paper napkins. Nothing wrong with paper if you don't want to go fancy cloth but maybe a better quality than the kind of napkin you get with your $2 charity sausage at mitre 10 on weekends. Lastly to be out of both meat dishes at 7pm on a Sat before the evening business had started... fair to say we didn't leave with the best impressions and compared to nelson where you're spoilt for great dining ootions we were rather disappointed with pictons offer.

Our dinner at Escape to Picton on our first night in town was among the best we had on our New Zealand trip. My blue cod dish was particularly good. Blue cod seems to be widely available and often offered in New Zealand, but Escape's rendition was the best that we encountered. The setting was cozy and romantic, and the service was great. (I notice that some other reviews have complained about the service. Perhaps those reviewers simply hit the restaurant on an off night.)

While I won't pretend to have sampled many of the restaurants in Picton, I would be amazed if Escape isn't by far the best in town. We simply could not understand why it didn't seem to have much business. Yes, it's expensive, but it seems that virtually all restaurants in New Zealand are expensive. Perhaps the problem is that everyone seems to congregate in the very small "center" of town, and Escape is a couple of blocks away. Or, perhaps it is that the restaurant is not marketed separately from the hotel, which (as I have said in my review of the hotel) is fabulous but is hung with an unfortunately awkward name. In any event, visitors who fail to try the restaurant are missing out on a treat.
