We were attracted by the menu in the window back in October 2012 when it had only been open for 3 weeks. Apart from very long waits for our orders, the excellent front of house acknowledged that there was an issue there, we were very impressed. We visited on a moderately busy Friday night (at a time of year when Picton is pretty dead) before heading home to ChCh. From reviews on a NZ dining review website it appears that the waiting issues have been resolved. Despite that I have to rate the service very good because of the excellent waitress. The experience was good enough that our late arrival home was not an issue!

“Koru, an affair to remember . . .”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

Before we visited Picton this past weekend, we did some research on the internet and found several raving comments from the locals on a new restaurant in Picton: Koru A Seafood Affaire. Since this restaurant is so new, it didn’t even have a position on TripAdvisor at the time. However, after reading the comments from other websites, we decided to give it a try, and what a fabulous try it was . . .! Koru A Seafood Affaire must be the best seafood restaurant we have visited in New Zealand (among other countries in the world that we have travelled to). The chef certainly knows how to prepare fish and shellfish that retain all the freshness from the ocean. Their seafood platter comes in a very large portion that can easily be shared between two people, and this dish includes some of the rarest seafood that you could find in any restaurant! How about paua (or abalone as most countries call them) fritter, which came as slices of soft dark bread contrasting with the unique texture and flavour of paua. We have lived in NZ for four years, and this is the first time we found a restaurant that uses fresh paua for their dish (most of the times, you cannot even find paua on the menu!). Most of the other countries that we’ve been to, paua would come frozen or from a can. Fresh oysters on the shell and sea urchin (this is the sea urchin endemic to NZ only, called Kina by the Kiwis) burst with ocean flavour when slipped gently into our palate. Pieces of different kind of fish were also on the plate and came as pan-fried and smoked, together with plump and juicy green-lipped mussels, large grilled prawns, tender pieces of squid, and succulent scallops topped with a creamy seafood sauce that was not the same old lemon butter sauce, but must have been simmered slowly with the fresh prawn roes, white wine, fresh herbs, and ripe tomatoes. Last but not least, a freshly steamed paddle crab completed this wonderful seafood platter! The excellent food was accompanied with a list of Marlborough wines at very reasonable prices. We also tried two different desserts that day (a melt-in-your-mouth cheese cake and a beautiful cream tart topped with fresh summer berries), and the dessert prices were much lower than dessert prices at typical restaurants in NZ.

The meal was so good and the service was very attentive (our waitress was very friendly and honest about her recommendations) that we decided to have our second fling with Koru A Seafood Affaire on our last night in Picton, and again, it was another memorable night! This time we ordered both entrees and main courses, and we thought the main courses’ portion was very generous, but the entrees came as big as the main courses, and their prices were even lower than the dessert prices at other restaurants! I was raving about my freshest lobster salad with a fabulous seafood dressing while my husband was savouring his pan-fried blue cod (the favourite fish for most Kiwis), since it was again cooked to perfection. I pride myself as a gastronomer (and weekend chef) who has sampled fabulous food around the world, and I dare say that the chef’s cooking method is a pleasant liaison between the sophisticated French cuisine and the most exotic Southeast Asian flavours (think of romantic Normandie by a pier or lush green coconut trees on a sandy beach in Vietnam). By the way, even though we ordered only seafood dishes on both occasions, we noticed that there were also interesting meat and chicken dishes on the menu, along with different types of salad. All dishes also came with beautiful garnishes of fresh fruits and vegetables.

Our friendly waitress remembered us right away when we came in the second time, and as we were leaving, we had to congratulate the talented chef for giving us another reason to visit Picton, again and again . . . Koru, it is an affair to remember . . .
