“Stunning area”

What a wonderful part of our beautiful country. It was so remote that we saw many more stars than in the city!

“Hike it? Nope, we cruised it.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

Hubby and I needed an easier, less physical way to see Queen Charlotte Sound and some of the Marlborough Sound area that tramping/camping it. We were very pleased to find a 2-night scalloping cruise aboard the Affinity. Yes, we did numerous dredges for scallops, helped bring them aboard, sorted, them, sized them, cleaned them, cooked them and ate them down. Yum!

We explored the many coves in the area including famous Ship's Cove where Captain Cook came ashore 6 times during his years exploring New Zealand. We also went ashore at Motuara Island Preserve; beautiful scenery (though it's an uphill hike all the way) and some wonderful endemic birds.

While not a luxury cruise, it was very comfortable, we met the nicest people and we didn't have to do the cooking or cleaning up. Check it out! http://www.affinitycruises.co.nz/

Interesting cruise delivering mail to cottages around the sound, also a 20 mins stopover at Cook's memorial.

“wonderful place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2014

We recently spent 4 days in the Marlborough Sounds area, based in Picton, and loved every minute of it. The Qn Charlotte Sound is simply beautiful, whether seen from the water or the land (the Scenic Drive to Havelock is a must, but you need to allow plenty of time to traverse the narrow winding road). You can do daily sections of the Qn Chalotte Track, if hiking is your thing, but there are easy to moderate walks accessible from Picton all over the Victoria Domain, which is a wooded bluff across from the Marina, all the way down to its end at The Snout. The walks range from about 30 minutes (to Bob's Beach) to several hours to the Snout and back, and afford lovely views. Whatever you do, be sure to take a water-based tour. We went on an Eco-tour to Motuara Island bird sanctuary and saw some of the rarest seabirds on earth en route. Had we seen nothing else, however, the glorious views back along the sound from the look-out at the top of the island were worth the trip. Really breath-taking. A magnificent part of the world, provided the weather is sunny (which it often is).
