We wanted a quick glimpse of the Queen Charlotte Sounds. 3 daughters aged 9 to 17yrs. We did a 3 day trek and saw some of the most beautiful serene country that we have ever seen.
We chose the Cougar Water Taxi out to Ships cove, (chased by dolpins on the wake), which took about 45 mins, walked to Endeavour Inlet, which should have taken 5 hours medium pace, except for old me with sore knees and feet (very unfit). Stayed at Endeavour Resort for the night which was very comfy, quiet and the view was amazing. After we left the next day we were told that we missed two Orca's in the inlet. Next day was easier and not as long. Gentle up and down around the coast, again with spectacular views of the loveliest green water.
approx 3-5 hours walk. We stayed at the lovely Punga Cove Resort in the Bellbird Suite quite elevated, and private spa outside overlooking the whole cove, again with top views. Pricey but well worth the luxury. Then the next day we were collected by Cougar Taxi (great drivers and very friendly) and they transported us back opposite Picton but we walked up and over the hill down to Kenepuru Sound and stayed at a lovely house called DeBretts Backpackers. Very suitable for 2 adults and 4 children. Three Bedroom house with verandah looking down on many bays and hills. Just spectacular. Collected the next morning by Cougar, returned to Picton in time to catch the ferry to Wellington. If we had more time we would have loved to do more walking on the tracks. Contact Picton Information. They were unbelievably helpful. Thanks Rachael!!!
