“Stunning views”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

A few minutes driving from central Picton, just after Karaka Point, you can find this beautiful homestay, surrounded by nature and featuring stunning views of the sounds.

Our separate unit was large, bright, perfectly appointed and very peaceful.

Free private parking is available just outside the unit. There are also a small beach (at low tide) and a jetty.

Colette is a lovely host and cooks fantastic breakfasts. It's been a pleasure meeting her.

The only drawback was that there was no internet access at the time we visited, but that was not a problem as we kept ourselves busy watching stingrays from our deck, spending time with the resident cats, observing local birds and looking at the stars.

Room Tip: Individual units have fabulous views

If you are looking for accommodation in the Picton area, then you should go to this beautiful homestay bed and breakfast. You will be made to feel so welcome, you'll be in such a beautiful place right next to the water of the Sounds, great accommodation, fab breakfast. Absolutely 100% recommended. Will definitely return there without question. It's a short drive from Picton, but not too far that it's an issue. We loved our time there. Thanks very much for a memorable stay.

Room Tip: The separate units are superb with amazing views out over the Sounds and you can walk down to the wa...

If you like a very friendly hostess, lovely rooms and a fantastic view of the bay then this is the place to stay. We were made really welcome and felt right at home straight away. The location is wonderful, a bit outside Picton on the coast road so sitting on our decking there wasn’t another building in sight just the sound, the boats, the vegetation and the birds. You felt it was a little bit of paradise. Ideal as a base to walk part of the Queen Charlotte Track or do a wine tour of the Marlborough vineyards.

We stayed here at Whatamonga Homestay for three days around my birthday in February. It was my first visit to New Zealand and everything was beautiful, but those three days were sublime. Standing on the balcony and taking in the scene, and the sounds, or the silence, morning and night - or anytime in between - was breathtaking. Colette is a wonderful host, and her warmth, good humour and caring attention to detail complemented the whole wonderful experience. Jon W.

We can only repeat what everyone else is saying: it's a great place with an amazing view, very comfortable and the hostess Colette is simply wonderful. She makes sure you have everything you need and prepares a delicious breakfast. The room we stayed in had no TV which was strange (because unusual nowadays) at first but who needs aTV if you can just keep watching the beautiful sound from your bed.

I cannot say enough for this incredible homestay. Collette the host from the very beginning welcomed us warmly and went out of her way to make us feel at home with the little extras in the room - home made biccies and nibbles, bottled water etc that were renewed DAILY and the incredible breakfast each morning we were there; which included pancakes one morning, scrambled eggs another and massive scrummy home made scones on another! But keeping in mind all of this was served each morning along with yoghurt, fruit, cereal, croissants and toast! So we certainly never left hungry!

The accommodation was honestly perfect - extremely comfortable beds, lots of room to spread out, clean, nicely decorated with excellent showers. We actually had the pleasure of experiencing both types of accommodation. We had one night in under the house - a unit that has been built in underneath the main house but is very private and quiet and has beautiful views. And as if that wasn't spectacular enough the following two nights we were lucky enough to be able to stay in one of the self contained cabins which was just incredible with its own little balcony looking out over ocean and the jetty below (which we walked down to and enjoyed a relaxing afternoon of sunbaking, swimming and watching the fish - the water was beautifully clear!) We had the option of taking the kayaks or the boat out and when we go back we definitely will but we were so relaxed we decided not to.

It was very private and tranquil but yet not far from the town centre and anything you need. also there were a few great restaurants along the way back to the town centre that were fantastic and on the water. Collette will recommend the best of the bunch from family casual places to fine dining! The best option is to hire a car out for the duration of your stay as there are so many beautiful inlets to discover!

Whatamonga is truly a tranquil peaceful gorgeous setting. Perfect for families or a romantic getaway for couples. It was like going to a health retreat for a few days! I can safely say we had one of the most stunning views I have had at any accommodation out of all my trips around the world! Just breathtaking. My husband and I truly did not want to leave! But when we did we left feeling rejuvenated and with incredible memories of this truly stand out place from our holiday.

Collette was a wonderful warm friendly host and on our last night she even invited us up for nibblies - cheeses, fruit and wine and we left knowing we had made a new friend and knowing we will be back. I have, and will continue to recommend whatamonga homestay to all I meet. It truly is a magical place and must not be missed. You will thank yourselves for it!

Wow - what a fantastic review. We are really thrilled you had a relaxing wonderful holiday with us. Many of our guests really enjoy sitting on their private deck and taking in the tranquil, stunning view...some also find it hard to leave.
Colette would love to have you visit again and this time you must find some time to explore the Sounds from the kayaks.
