Excellent "Freedom Walk" tour with added on trip out to bird sanctuary island. The island had an easy trail to the top with nesting boxes for the penguins. The pick up at the island was on time and an easy ride over to our drop off point at Ship Cove. Walking on the Queen Charlotte Track was great with excellent views. We had an excellent day!

This is Glynis from Kapiti 4 Seasons. Beachcomber cruises is the only licensed NZ post agent for water deliveries in this area. They provided a nice comfortable catamaran with seating indoors and out. The boats leave most days at 1-30pm so very good timing for people arriving from Wellington on the morning ferry and also people arriving from Christchurch train to connect with ferry to Wellington. Why not stay an extra night at the Gateway motel like we did and really enjoy the mail-boat cruise. We picked the Saturday cruise because it goes further to remote areas that only get mail once a week. People and their animals were waiting at jetties in very remote locations in the famous Marlborough Sounds. Dogs of all sizes knew our skipper had dog biscuit treats, a goat wanted to come onto our boat and apparently we missed a pig who regularly greets the mail boat... Free tea and coffee was available and many people brought their own foods to snack on as the boat returned about 6pm on Saturdays (longest route) Skipper gave great narration of the area along with much kiwi humour and his young son Toby...
We plan to do this again as many people in our travel club missed this trip... A beautiful journey, remote places, roads don't reach many of these people plus the roads take longer than the waterways. All eight of us had a great, yet relaxing time!!!

There is no better way to take in the sound than by water. We only had time for Ships Cruise a 3 hour cruise departing at 930. Our skipper Matt provided interesting commentary along the way pointing out landmarks etc we got about 15 min on ships cove where Captain Cook landed. On the way back we came across a pod of dolphins who swam right beside the boat - definitely a highlight of omy trip to NZ. I would have loved to take in the mail run - where groceries are delivered to remote communities but we didn't have time.

Hello AoifeBr,
Thank you for taking the time to write on trip advisor.
We are so happy to hear that you enjoyed your time with us cruising through the sounds.
We hope that if you ever come back to Picton that you will join us on the Mail Boat as it is a must do in the sounds, the dolphins would of made the morning cruise that much more special for you.
Thank you for choosing to travel with our company and crew.
We hope to see you back in Picton.
Thanks

We took a cruise from picton to ships cove and return from furneaux lodge and had an amazing experience. Matt our captain could not have been lovelier or more knowledgable about the area. He slowed the boat several times to allow us to enjoy dolphin and whale watching as we passed several pods on our way to and from Picton. Couldn't recommend more highly

Beachcomer Fun Cruises take passengers aboard the Magic Mail Boat run each day from Picton, plying the Queen Charlotte Sound to deliver and collect mail from the isolated houses in the bays and inlets. The cruise took over four and a half hours and was just amazing. The captain was great, giving a running commentary on the islands and communities and a feel for the lives of the families living in these beautiful settings. And we stopped at little jetties and mail bags were exchanged or groceries delivered, a little chat would ensue between the captain and the owner of the property and their pets might amble down the jetty for a biscuit too! The odd dog, hen, goat and pig on our Beachcomer Fun Cruises trip! I am sure it helped that the weather was glorious, but we spent the whole time on the top open deck, with just a quick visit down below (to the equally lovely lounge) to make a cup of tea from the complimentary tea/coffee bar and visit the spotlessly clean loo! He also points out any wildlife, such as seals, and you get out of the boat at Captain Cook's memorial in Ship Cove, which was a really peaceful picturesque bay. I would highly recommend this cruise.
