“Stopped in for lunch”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 13, 2012

We stopped in for lunch on our drive out to Akaroa from Christchurch. My husband and I shared garlic bread and the battered blue cod with chips & salad. Everything we had was very nice, and the fish was beautifully fresh. The service was good and the brightness & position of the restaurant very pleasant. It was a very windy that day, so it was nice to be in the shelter but not feel closed in.

“Don't believe the hype”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2012

Akaroa is truly a beautiful location and Bully Hayes is supposed to be an iconic cafe of great repute. However it is far from this, the food is mediocre at best and often appalling quality for the price. But what makes this establishment the pits is the service, the front line staff are rude, surly and inhospitable, they share the people skills of concentration camp guards, regardless of age they display the same level of immaturity and inexperience, barking commands to be seated they then hover over your table punching your order into a lifeless tablet that allows no deviation from the menu...any request that differs with the computer is met with an unfriendly glare of irritation and a barrage of reasons why you cannot deviate from the computed list.
Following this anything up to an hour can pass before your food arrives, barely warm and if you have ordered poached eggs swimming in water, your food arrives, rudely deposited at the table, toast unbuttered, you feel genuinely frightened to ask for sauce or some butter for fear of the unpleasant sour faced strumpets that stalk the floor slapping you across the face.
I appreciate this sounds dramatic, but it really is that bad, we are regular visitors to Akaroa and have watched this establishment deteriorate over time, the days of Vicky and her fantastic service are long gone, service in New Zealand is never that flash, superficial banal questions like "how's your day been so far" at six o clock in the morning or the completely false sounding "busy day ahead", but even these most false and monotonous questions are not asked here, you are lucky to get a word of thanks when you settle the bill.
Everyone thinks Bully Hayes is the place to go, the reason for that is that there is not much choice in Akaroa and it's a good sized roomy cafe with great views and good outdoor seating...that's about all it has...take our advice, try somewhere else, you will be glad you did, even the Z garage has better food and service...the food is borderline acceptable, but what completely buries this restaurant is the absolutely unprofessional, insincere and unfriendly staff, quite simply the worst we have ever come across in years of global travel.

“Better than OK - but not by much”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

I've eaten here before, albeit some years ago, and I remember being quite impressed at the time, but not now, it's not bad - but it's missing something.

We had the Akaroa Salmon Gravlax and the mushroom medley tagliatelle and a side of fries with aioli. The Salmon dish as a whole was very good, the local salt cured salmon was divine, and the portion very generous, the only complaint about the dish was very minor - the avocado wasn't quite ripe enough. The mushroom dish was perhaps a little better than the salmon dish (although that salmon really was hard to beat!), however when being described a 'mushroom medley' it might have been nice to have had more than two different types of mushrooms in the dish, but then again that is possibly just my being picky.

If I were rating on the above meals alone I would have given Bully Hayes a solid 4/5, but service and a side of fries have let them down. I'm not sure if our waitress was socially inept or just rude, but she is not doing the restaurant any good - in fact she's the reason we didn't order coffee for afters as originally planned, she really needs some lessons in customer service and a smile wouldn't hurt either.

The fries were also a let down. How can you get the mains so right and yet turn out a whole bowl full of under-cooked fries? I can only assume the chef/s leave cooking the fries up to someone who should probably only be allowed on dish duty, because they really weren't at all acceptable and any greasy 16 year olds at McDonalds can get french fries right!

“Dinner at Bully Hayes”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2012

Dinner was included as part of a Grabaseat three day weekend. Two choices either a entree and main or a main and dessert. We chose an entree which we shared -soup which was excellent, steak for the main each - which was superb and a chocolate dessert again shared- delicious! Excellent food and service. We had a table facing the street. Also had breakfast there and after noon tea. Great friendly service and large meals.
