My wife and I live in Christchurch and have stayed at L'Hotel on a number of occasions for a short break away from the city. The bedroom balconies overlooking the boulevard waterfront location are perfectly designed to catch the ambience of the beautiful harbour views, and the complex boasts a restaurant and bar also opening onto the waterfront which provides excellent cuisine as well as great service. The really amazing thing about our most recent visit, however, was the tremendous gesture of kindness shown us by the owners, Meg and Tom. We were guests when the Christchurch earthquake struck and when they learned that our home had been affected, they generously provided us with free accommodation for a week until we could get our lives back on track!!! How great is that?
We are so grateful to them and to Akaroa for such kindness. It made us proud to be NZ'ers!

Wonderful staff and hosts, even more so as we were there during the earthquake. Akaroa was not really damaged. It is the most beautiful of locations, the rooms open out onto balconies overlooking the bay. The restaurant is good and there is a lot of choice out there. Support them - it is perfectly safe there. The dolphins and wildlife are great too

I stayed at L'hotel for a relaxing treat with my boyfriend after my final University Exams, and could not have chosen a better place.

The rooms were pretty, clean and breezy - the room had its own balcony where we watched the sun set over the harbour with a bottle of bubbly from the restaurant below. It was idyllic! The food was yummy, especially the Crayfish.

The service was impressive - young, relaxed and helpful, but also very professional. We are already planning a weekend get-away at L'hotel for the new year.

We've stayed at L'Hotel twice and loved it. You can't beat the location, right on the waterfront across from the wharf with a great restaurant and bar downstairs and views to die for. Both times we have visited Akaroa have been in winter, stunning days but too cold to really sit outside but all the rooms upstairs at Akaroa face directly into the afternoon sun and lounging inside behind the glass, reading a good book is just bliss. So warm with a stunning outlook.

I highly recommend the "hippy" pizza with added ham but a trap for some is that the restaurant says it is open 'til late'. Don't get caught out that's late Akaroa time so really not past 8. The first night we were there was a Monday and the restaurant was busy until about 10pm but on the second night it had all but shut when we went in at 8pm but the staff were great - they made us a pizza, gave us drinks on the house and gave us a couple of chocolate muffins to take back to our room for dessert - we couldn't have asked for more really.

The resident population of Akaroa is about 500 but swells to more than 10 times that in summer which I think would be hideous so my recommendation would be to opt for the shoulder season.

Last time we went in August and had a great night out at the local cinema/cafe, this time despite being a month later and found it to be closed for the winter which was a shame but if you get the chance definitely check out the cinema.

A room with a view! Fantastic location and no need to go further than down to the restaurant bar to eat as the food from the award winning chef was great, varied and fast.
We loved this place as it was a complete escape with the most amazing views from the balcony and we coudnt have asked for more. Wish we could make this our weekend retreat but unfortunately its on the other side of the world!

We stayed for 1 night enroute. Akaroa is such a pretty place but it's a bit of a way to get to...very windy roads that take forever. The hotel is quaint and pretty and I liked the room..large, comfy, trendy and nice kitchenette and balcony overlooking the bay. Perfect to relax with a glass of wine. The service however was not so good. The owner had changed since we booked but we did not know. They tried to charge more for the 1 night with dinner deal but we refused. They didn't push it to be fair. Our dinner was very nice but the service was very slow and we had to keep asking for everything. There were other there who's meals were not so good and a few people seemed to be complaining.
It seems to be run by very young people who are a bit clueless. Having said all that we enjoyed our stay.
