“Book early”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2014

Book early for Akaroa then you aren't left with this option.
It looks quaint on the photo but in essence is a single skin breeze block building with both internal and external walls painted. Can't imagine what the condensation must be like in winter. The decor is unique! A relic from the 1970's and not a pretty or functioning one. I asked my wife to turn the TV on being convinced it would be one channel in black and white, that was the newest item in the place.
This is the second worse place I have visited in New Zealand in 10 years (Whanganui gets top spot) and is an embarrassment to the NZ tourist industry that these places exit on the main tourist routes.
The owner needs to do more than a lick of paint, and gut the rooms, refreshing all quarters, from the creeky old very soft bed with the suspiciously stained quilt! To the 1970's bathroom and kitchenette.
Seriously, for the money, BOOK EARLY, OR I would give back packers a look in the centre, they looked cleaner and obviously cheaper then you would have more money to spend on the excellent food and drink that is available in the town. The town and it's environs are gorgeous.

Room Tip: Akaroa books up quick, plan ahead and get somewhere on the east side of the town and closer walking...

We stayed in room 2 and loved the easy check in (key in the door...help yourself) and the large old style room. We enjoyed the pretty patio, the sunshine and the view up the street before wandering down to the fish n chip shop. Dont miss the HarBar for sunset drinks.

Just like it says La Rive Motel is clean and affordable, while it can be agreed that La Rive is tired in appearance, it is nonetheless adequate in meeting the needs of travellers in what is a pricey tourist environment.
La Rive's central location means you can park the car up and enjoy the sights as you walk through this gorgeously quaint, scenic town. The Motel staff we dealt with during our stay were welcoming, helpful and friendly.

Lower priced accommodation and it showed. Lower level room, very small kitchen, small bathroom - shower didn't drain properly. Only stayed one night so ok. You get what you pay for, unfortunately accommodation is limited in Akaroa in peak periods. Would be great if renovated/updated as short walk to town.

Had a 2 night stay here with 2 kids and with family in the next room.
Room was clean but needs to be updated. We didn't have enough towels and face clothes on arrival but owner sorted it out quickly..

First, lower you expectations. This is not a fancy place. The rooms are cute but spacious. Plenty of parking, good WIFI, clean rooms lots of hott water and a very sensitive owner. Since Akaroa was originally a French settlement, the room reminded us very much of France. We were there just after winter but it was still cold and rainy. The room had an efficient space heater and the bed contained dual control heating pads under the bottom sheet. Prices were excellent, especially since we were there for part of the Akaroa French festival. Located only a short walk from the heart of town, and we had a wonderful stay. We were there for two nights and would have stayed longer had our schedule permitted. It is not a five star hotel, but the value for the money is outstanding!

Stayed one night after doing the Banks Penninsula Track. Booked the cheapest motel we could find. Unlike some of the other reviews found the unit to be spacious, clean and bright. Its basic and not all new but had everything we needed and was partially renovated. We had the front bottom unit with nice sun filled patio. Receptionist was friendly, would stay there again.
