Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: A unique journey from the charming shoreline village of Akaroa, up over the rim of an extinct volcano, past spectacular farmland and ocean views, and down eastern slopes to the Pacific Ocean. There, at the foot of one-hundred-metre cliffs, we will encounter an adorable colony of New Zealand Fur Seals, swimming and sun bathing amongst 8-million-year-old volcanic deposits.

We had a fantastic time at the seal tour with Paul. We enjoyed the drive up through his vast fields. Even though it was a misty day, the moment we came down from the vehicle, we were greeted with a breathtaking sight of the sea right before us. It was a one-of-a-kind experience climbing down the rocks to see the seals. We had 3 children with us, aged 11, 8 and 3. I must say it was quite an adventure for the kids and for us as parents, watching the 2 older children move down the cliff. We carried the 3-year old down and although it was tiring, it was manageable. The effort was well worth it. We saw quite a few seals even though it was the mating season and most male seals were chased off by the dominant males. We also had tea and home-made muffins (using lemons from Paul's garden!) right by the sea. If we had time, we could have sat there for hours, the place was just so lovely.

Paul was very knowledgeable and funny, and it was truly an enjoyable and educational experience for us. The kids enjoyed themselves tremendously. Would highly recommend the tour.

Had organised this tour prior to going on our cruise. No problems with communications... Must remember Paul is a working farmer so allow time for him to reply. His job is outdoors.
Our trip to Akaroa was delayed by a day but no issues with that.
Picked up at wharf .. Taken in mini bus up through some spectacular countryside. My partner and son had never seen snow before so Paul stopped the van and allowed us to have some time making snowballs and throwing them.
We continued on to Paul's property, short walk down the rocky cliffs( thanks Paul for pushing me to do it) The end result mind blowing . So many seals and pups metres away from us. Absolutely amazing. . My 10 year old witnessed a seal vomiting... That was the highlight of his holiday ( He presented a power point talk to his class today on the seals at Akaroa). We were able to spend quite some time watching the seals in their natural habitat
Then back to sit on the cliff top and have a cuppa and some awesome muffins made by Paul himself.
This was the kind of tour we love. Small , informative , slightly off the beaten track and a local operator who enjoys his job.

We stayed at Pauls B&B and went on a private tour to his farmland on the shore and "his" furseal colony.
First we were a bit sceptical because we had seen already seals in five other locations.
On arrival after the 4WD trip, half a dozen jounsters slowly moved off the picknick table.
Climbing down over the sharp rocks we found literally over a hundred female seals with pups everywhere. One pup came sniffing our boots.
We stayed over an hour to admire the scene while Paul was telling a lot about them.
Comparing costs with other viewings, it was equally high but this time a very worthwhile experience.
Coffee and cakes back home at the B&B.

We scheduled this trip as a side trip to our NZ Celebrity Cruise.
Paul was an excellent guide. His property is a perfect place to visit and see how the NZ live.
He has a vast knowledge of seals and it's so nice to have a personal, private tour.
He even made us muffins and hot tea or coffee. The seals were amazing in their natural habitat.

We were met in akaroa by Paul at the cruise port as we had a stop there for the day. He had a small tour bus which made for such a personal tour experience as there wasn't a huge tour group of people. His tour for this particular day was fully booked, so if you want to get on this tour be sure to book! I'd also say to try to call him and email him as it is a working farm so you might get a quicker response if you call him.
Paul is a 5th generation farmer to his farm and he told us lots of story's from the past.
He drove us through the beautiful Akaroa countryside and as we drove he explained various things about the local area.
Once we arrived at his farm, it's a short drive over the land to the coastal part of his farm. When we arrived its a short walk down to the seals. We were fortunate enough that at this time of year (December) the seal mothers had just had seal pups so there was a heap of pups to see as well, some were only 2 days old. One little one even crawled up to us he was probably as close as a foot away.
You were literally within a metre or two of the seals and Paul is so knowledgable about the seals and there habitat. He is very passionate about the seals and loves to tell you all these interesting facts!
This tour is an absolute must to see if your in akaroa and the town itself is a beautiful town with boutique shops, a definite favourite for my husband and I.
