Akaroa Seal Colony Safari

Recommended length of visit: 2-3 hours
Owner description: A unique journey from the charming shoreline village of Akaroa, up over the rim of an extinct volcano, past spectacular farmland and ocean views, and down eastern slopes to the Pacific Ocean. There, at the foot of one-hundred-metre cliffs, we will encounter an adorable colony of New Zealand Fur Seals, swimming and sun bathing amongst 8-million-year-old volcanic deposits.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand. We were picked up from the wharf by Hanne and driven to their property where we met Paul who took us to the seal colony. The colony is located at the end of their enormous property. Paul is very passionate about this place as this is where he and his sister grew up. Paul is the 5th gereation to work the land with their farm grazing sheep and bulls.
Paul explained to us the cycle and social structure of the colony. It was amazing to see so many seals in one place. We would highly recommend this tour.
The tour is very personal as the numbers are limited to 6-8 persons only.

The Akaroa Seal Safari is a great way to spend 2-3 hours in Akaroa. Our tour guide, Paul, picked us up from the Akaroa information centre and drove us through his farm to the beautiful coastline where the seals were (the seal colony is on his property!).

It was wonderful to see the adorable seals up so close and personal without being surrounded by hoardes of tourists (six people per tour).

Paul is very knowledgeable about the seals and the area they inhhabit and gave us an excellent tour. To top it off he even served up hot drinks and a snack at a point where we had a superb view over the ocean!

Great value. Thoroughly recommended.
