We joined for a tour of the little blue penguins and we were amazed! It was totally different from what you get elsewhere (with hundreds of people sitting and waiting for the penguins) - here it was in a small, personal group, it felt "real". You just walk across the fields and look down to the shore line. You are provided with binoculars and you can also see the many birds out on the sea, waiting for darkness to come home. We were shown a chick which they found and tried to rescue, it was really touching your heart. Most of respect for those people who did save the blue penguin, without further help, with a lot of voluntary work. Great job!

In New Zealand we went on tours to see the New Zealand South Island Penguins, which we had a great time doing because of the atmosphere of the hundreds of little penguins huddling and waddling about falling over every now and again. The place was called the Penguin Town which was filled with colonies of huddling penguins, although you’d have to go out in the late afternoon around sixish to see them, it’s well worth the wait in the day for the cute baby penguins! I’d love to go see the little babies again, because it’s a fun and exciting activity if you live in New Zealand, I’d deffinently recommend it to you, if you already haven’t seen it that is!

although we weren't lucky enough to see any dolphins, we did have a unique vantage point (paddling our own sea kayak) for witnessing a turf war among seals, exploring sea caves, and spotting penguins. april & kevin were fun, flexible, and friendly hosts, allowing us to start early to accommodate our schedule and even offering a cup of tea at the conclusion of our kayaking.

I would advise anyone interested in Kayaking near Akaroa to look into this as an option. Not only was the kayaking really fun, we saw the penguins and seals and felt privileged to be guided by such a specialised guide! I also bottle fed lambs which was a real bonus and the free range eggs we bought from the farm were the best eggs I've ever tasted!

Up close and personal observation of these amazing little penguins. Hosted by a highly dedicated local family. Well worth it.
