Our cottage was clean and comfortable with stunning views over the harbour . It was very pleasant to eat fish and chips with a glass of wine on the verandah. The receptionist was very helpful. The cottage could do with modernisation and more cupboards - a lot of wasted space. Although not far from town you do need to take the car as the road is very busy and has no pavement. We enjoyed our stay

You can't fault the luxury of these gorgeous cabins, ours had a view to die for. The managers were more than helpful and really friendly. I had the longest bath in the spa bath in our room and the self contained kitchen facilities were excellent.

The Akaroa Shuttle service from Christchurch was brilliant, and the very knowledgable singing bus driver was worth every penny! The driver dropped us off outside the cottages. The walk up the long gravel drive with 2 suitcases was a challenge!

I guess the only slight downside was the location, again the views were amazing but it was a little out of the main town. We didn't have a car. It's a 2 minute drive, but about a 20 minute (beautiful and scenic) walk. Not a problem for us, but it could be for other travellers with no transport so I thought I would mention it. But, the managers were also only too happy to drop us down into town and did on one occasion.

The place of Akaroa is definitely well worth a stop and is absolutely stunning.

I would definitely go back and it's definitely been added to our "places to retire" list :o)

Thank you for your great review, i would like to take the opportunity to advise all people looking at our property that we are 10-15 min walk away as on our website from Akaroa township and you would have to walk along the main highway which has enough room to the village, while it is only a 2 minute drive. the walk back is the killer (UPHILL). Should you travel by Bus please get dropped off at the visitors centre and ask them to ring us and we will come down and pick you up. The gravel road on our property is not suitable for pulling suitcases.
We have to agree this would be a supper place to retire, even to live is pretty fantastic Akaroa is relaxed and friendly.

We were really looking forward to our stay at Akaroa Cottages and expected a boutique style studio within walking distance of Akaroa and views over the bay, as described on the website. We were left to find our own way to a dreary 50+year old croquet hut, poorly maintained and surrounded by dense woodland. The walls were plain off white and the carpet, curtains and bedcover plain grey/beige. No attempt had been made to dress the room by adding colour or lamps, cushions, throws, pictures or flowers. It was very basic and not even clean. I had a long dress to hang in the wardrobe and I had to wipe out the dust from the base before I could use it. Also some of the drawers in the kitchen area had been neglected and needed a good scrub. There was a wood burning stove in the corner of the room, which again could have been a quirky feature, but it still had the remains of the last fire in the grate which must have been there for sometime. It is also too far to walk along a busy road into Akaroa so you need to tackle the difficult entry/exit route every time you go out. As you might gather we would not recommend this property and question the star rating! The photo on the website is taken from the reception area. With the exception of a couple of newish looking cottages close by, most of the other buildings were dated and definitely not 5 star. Sort yourselves out Akaroa Cottages.

We are sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay with us here at the Akaroa Cottages. All our cottages are privately owned, and we have been trying now for some time to get this cottage and some of our others upgraded, the owner of this one is coming to see us with in the next week as we to would like to see these cottages have some life put back into them. The inside of the cottage though is not at all like you have described, The New curtains, carpet all natural colors and the Walls are painted in Akaroa, we triple sheet all our beds in White Sheeting. It is not everyone's taste but my last 3-5 guests that have departed have loved it. We have Fresh garden flowers in all our cottages. We also have both our cottages photo's on all web listing just so you can see what you are purchasing for your stay. The newish looking rooms are our 2 and 3 bedroom cottages which have been on the property since it fist started in 1998. Unfortunately when the croquet club from down in the village was re located up here and purchase by it's owner they failed to give it that lease of life that she needed back then. I am a little taken back with your score of service , as we pride our self on service by going the extra mile. Should you have come to us when you arrived or found this issues we could have fixed some of your problems. FOR all incoming Guests reading this The Bush view cottages are historic icons that have been relocated to the Akaroa Cottages many years ago, while they are rustic 70's NZ batch style on the outside, they are comfortable Studio style accommodation the inside that have Flat Screen TV, Digital SKY , Comfortable beds top quality bedding, Spa Baths etc. Surrounded by Trees and gravel roads a little dust is normal, they are cleaned daily at this time of the year. They are not everybody's cup of tea, and if you are after 5 star which we are not, DO NOT book these bushview cottages email us manager@akaroahbc.co.nz and we can advise the best style suitable for you

We stayed in the 3 bedroom sea view cottage as two couples. This is one of about 10 cottages and studios located in well-maintained wooded grounds on a bluff overlooking Akaroa. The location and views are fantastic. The main driveway was being repaired while we were there but the alternative access was fine and the roads to the cottages, although a little steep in places are absolutely fine. The staff at reception, including the couple who manage the facility, were really helpful and friendly and gave us lots of good advice.
However, the cottage that we occupied does need some modernisation and improvement. The bathrooms look very dated and the decor and furnishings need a make-over. The deck furniture consists of 4 really cheap plastic chairs that you get in garden centres for about $20 and a really old small table with rusted feet. Even with 4 people the deck is too narrow, and in reality the deck is too small for a cottage that can accommodate 6 people. (The cottages are individually owned but centrally managed, so the improvements needed are down to the owner and not a reflection on the management company, who seemed to us to be doing an excellent job. I hope our comments provide some impetus to the cottage owner!)

We stayed in a 3 bed cottage with friends, it had 2 bathrooms a spacious lounge and kitchen area. Very clean, a good gas barbecue on the veranda proved useful.
We had a 4x4 so the driveway which was temporary as under repair was very steep.
Its necessary to drive into Akaroa.
The views are fantastic over the bay

Room Tip: All cottages looked good.

We booked a studio cottage for one night at this complex of cottages just outside Akaroa but feel we should have opted for a B&B after our experience. The steep downward drive to the reception was quite scary ( the usual road apparently undergoing repairs) Our studio cottage was very dark inside being right back onto the mountainside so no views from the back. The veranda area was ok but looked a little neglected. In fact that's the impression the whole studio had- needed a splash of cash. The mattress had seen better days, ie we rolled into the centre!! The old fashioned blue leather settee was showing signs of age too. Such a shame because the some of the larger cottages appeared more cared for. Spa bath was nice but overhead shower just satisfactory. The overhead fan in the living room was needed during the night as it was warm but the chord needed attention as it kept catching and so made an irritating clicking noise whilst in use ( only noticed once we turned the lights out) All these things are easily remedied with a little cash. Since arriving in NZ we have stayed in some fantastic B&Bs for around the same price so this experience was a little disappointing. The motel stay the night before in Kaikoura was only 145 NZ dollars but was actually alot newer and well maintained than this complex, granted it didn't have the view so maybe that's what we paid for at Akaroa??! No free Internet ( first time we have been charged during our stay) although on trying to contact we couldn't as we only had a MasterCard ( not accepted) small fridge containing ( opened from the wrong side) a large selection of alcohol ( all chargeable) had to empty out completely to keep our own small supplies cold. There's a small microwave and two ring electric stove but if staying for longer than a few nights this kitchen isn't the best for cooking own meals. Average accomodation only with room for improvement but with the potential of alot more.

Room Tip: Request larger cottage with light front and back of property. Avoid studio accomodation.

Thank you for your Review, I have BUSHSIDE cottage (A Seaview cottage not and Studio) in my head. As these units are all individually owned we have been trying very hard to get these upgraded and the one you did see has been upgraded, hopefully your review will help us. Unfortunately Our main Entrance is under major reconstruction, i know not a great time as we are so busy but as it gave way and became very unsafe. we are lucky our neighbors have allowed us to use their private entrance which allowed us to stay open at this very busy season. The steep hill the last part is always there and at this stage we are unable to think of a better solution to get everybody around the cottages with out using this road. Internet has always been a problem but like all the other Motels/Hotels in Akaroa there is a charge, We do have some form of free internet in the pipeline for this year. If guests are staying longer we do have a portable oven or BBQ's available it is just a matter of asking us. Thank you again for you constructive comments and we hope that they help and a little cash is splashed not only on this one but on some of the others that need some upgrading. Take care

Stayed here for a night during our honeymoon and had a blast. I love this town - It is so small yet so full of life !!

Hotel was nice, good rooms and sweet staff. Food was good as well but a little far from main town is the problem
