“Brilliant waterfront view”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 30, 2010

We spent 3 nights here in a wonderful room on the top floor, excellent views over the harbour, huge comfortable bed, all mod cons, cooking facilties plus if you ask they can give you a toaster oven and fry pan which came in very handy. The bathroom was very large and equipt with very good shampoo and body wash which you don't get very often these days, coffee plunger with coffee that was replaced every day and coffee mugs not tiny cups which we used everyday whilst sitting on our balcony looking at the view. The lady on duty is very lovely and there to help, there is a supermarket behind the hotel that has most things you could need and a lovely restaurant in the street infront. It is a short walk to the main wharf and there are loads of shops.

We stayed here for 2 nights at the start of our NZ tour, having booked in advance.

Good clean motel with great views over the harbour and mountains from the balcony of our very spacious room, car parking underneath, so you have stairs to climb but the Manager helped us old codgers up with our overweight cases! Honesty box in the laundry on ground floor and he let us hang out the washing in his back garden to dry.

A bit more expensive than most @ $180 NZ per night, but you are in beautiful Akaroa and it was the start of the holiday season. Do the Dolphin Cruise, visit the lovely interesting Museum, walk along to the restaurants in 10/15 mins in the main part of the town (Harbour 71 was disappointing with tiny portions of pretentious food) but Ma Maison opposite the Motel was excellent. We haven't got WiFi or whatever its called, but the cafe/shop two doors up has internet (a bit slow) and does a lovely cooked breakfast. On your way back to Christchurch take the scenic route - its excellent.

Sadly we only had the one night at Akaroa but our stay at this motel made our visit to this area just that much more enjoyable and memorable, from the very warm greeting upon arrival to the under-cover parking. The room was clean, extremely large with fantastic views and the location couldn't have been better. The range of free magazines to browse was also a nice touch. Thanks, David, and yes, we will be back!

  • Liked — Undercover parking, large room size
  • Disliked — As with amny motels - there ws no reading lamp over the table.

Room:
Stayed for one night. We were very impressed with the views from our room out across the harbor. The room itself was huge with a nice balcony. The room had a good sized refrigerator and a microwave. There was also a large flat screen TV and DVD player.

Location:
The Criterion is right next door to the Four Square grocery store and a good coffee shop. There are plenty of restaurants in the area as well. The tourist information center is across the street. The harbor is within view of many rooms and is only about 50 meters away.

Other amenities:
The Internet access scheme is a bit different. There are three pricing plans available and they are measured based on bandwidth, not on time. Their wireless access was poor. We couldn't get a connection to their hotspot from our room, we had to use an ethernet cable (which they provided). The next morning we noticed that we could reach a nearby wireless provider just fine (Altra) and their rates were actually cheaper. Wish we'd known that the day before.

There are guest laundry facilities available but they close at 8PM... not sure about the charges.

Arrived in the lovely "French" Akaroa on a somewhat overcast day, Motel front of house greeting was pretty poor..key given to us with little explanation of facilities etc. For the area this motel would probably be in the top five as there isn't much choice..but for us we found our two night stay at this motel pretty poor. View was good, room was clean..but the overall "feel" and "life" of the place lacked a bit. Room probably nearing/needing an "upgrade" in re to furnishings ( a few things like the shower had a wobbly glass surround). Bed was large but pretty hard....in general it's overall in the "ok" catagory for our likings.

Akaroa itself is great...quaint shops, cafes.....great evening dining at BullyHayes then a movie in the small (17 seat)..but luxurious movie theatre run at the local library...they even deliver a latte to your seat! A must do is the AKAROA DOLPHINS CRUISE....a smaller boat than the competitor but well worth it..a real "private" intimate cruise with tea/coffee..homebaking etc. We saw dolphins, penguins and seals..as well as lovely scenery.

Cafe scene was good. Hot Pumkin soup at the Deli was fab!

Also a MUST DO is the Little River Cafe and Gallery. Half way from Christchurch to Akaroa. Food and atmosphere really wonderful and the gallery has an awesome array of quality art and sculpture. Caramel slice...Devine.
