“A Great Potential let down by service”
Reviewed April 24, 2013

A one night stay was disappointingly let down by non availability of hot water due to gas not being replaced ( had problems yesterday aswell! ) and non communication regarding Internet code. The management staff were defensive and negative and we certainly wouldn't stay there again because of their attitude. Potentially it had everything going for it as advertised but the customer is not at the forefront of this business. Perhaps has something to do with why the main house is up for sale!

Room Tip: Corner room had good view

Thank you for your review. I would like to give our point of view as well, to the readers. You had no hot water for about 20 minutes until my husband changed the gas bottles over. This had been an error on our delivery company who in their wisdom had decided to change our delivery weeks and leave us for 3 weeks and not inform us. Everyone else in the complex was very nice about it.
. As for my not ringing you back with the internet code.after I said I would, well the office went manic and it totally slipped my mind. I would have thougt that you would have rung me back to ask why you hadnt had it. But No you demanded 50% off your bill for this treatment and got it because of your beligerant attitude, threats and rudeness to me. I am sorry that we could not be perfect however sometimes things can go wrong in Motels as in any business. and are not always my fault. We do try and give the best service possible to your customers and do succeed most of the time.

It was sheer luck that we found this place - two previous B&B bookings had fallen through, due to owners' ill-health, so at the last minute we rang the Criterion and were lucky enough to get a room for the 3 nights we required. We really weren't expecting much, so were absolutely thrilled when we arrived to discover that the motel is right in the centre of the village and very close to the waterfront. Our spacious unit on the top floor had a fantastic view right out over the jetty, and contained absolutely everything we needed. The owners were friendly and helpful, there is a guest computer, it was spotlessly clean and serviced daily - and we watched the sun go down over beautiful Akaroa Harbour from our balcony. Life doesn't get much better.

Room Tip: Top floor has the best views.

We stayed 3 nights in a top floor room (12) and thoroughly enjoyed it. The kitchenette was well equipped. A small couch and chair face a beautiful view of the harbor, as does the king size bed. Very nice balcony too. It's an easy walk from here to almost anything in Akaroa but far enough from the crowds (cruise boats stop here!) to be quiet. We took the French Connection shuttle from Christchurch. They picked us up at our Christchurch hotel and dropped us off at the Criterion. Same great service on our return.

The room that we stayed in was large and had everything that we needed. KItchenette, good sized bathroom, comfortable bed and quality tea, coffee, shampoo, conditioner, use of BBQ and laundry etc. All that you would need for a holiday. The owner was friendly when we arrived and has a beautiful dog. The scenery is spectacular. When we were in Akaroa it was crowded with tourists off the cruise ships. The drive from Christchurch took some time after arriving late in the afternoon, unfortunately to leave Akaroa, you have to return over the same road.

The dog thanks you for saying he is beautiful. He is a bit like us, getting older but always enjoys a good comment. He does his job of showing people to rooms well :) Glad you enjoyed your stay

Our third floor room had a nice view of the waterfront. The self-cater kitchenette was well equipped. The bathroom was a good size and the bed comfortable. Would definitely recommend the 3rd floor or you will just be looking out at the street.

Thank you for your review. We always appreciate them. By the way you do get sea views from most of the units not just the top floor.

We knew nothing of Akaroa and chose from web site.
It was one of best stays in New Zealand visit. Could not fault anything. Particularly found owner and wife ultra helpful. Well Done. We are usually very critical.

Stayed for two nights in a top floor room. View over the bay was excellent and the room was very large incorporating a kitchen, settee and chair plus table and two chairs, and plenty of room still to spare. Its been refurbished and is up for sale so expect standards to be high.
Its close to all the amenities but far enough away from the main bars to be quiet--everything is walking dostance in Akaroa. Good wifi. Virtyaully all rooms have decent size balconies which face the evening sun

Room Tip: Get a top floor room
