“Great Fun With the Shamarra Alpacas”
Reviewed February 28, 2013

Frank picked me up at the i-site and we learned a lot about Alpaca farming on our way to Shamarra Alpaca. Anya and Frank explained how they started this farm and how they care for the Alpacas. We got to visit the different paddocks where the young, pregnant and studs stay. These gentle animals came to greet us and take photos with us on this breathtaking property in Akaroa. It was a real highlight of my trip to New Zealand. If you like animals, you will love this! Don't miss it!

You are absolutely correct - an animal lover's dream come true! We have more baby alpacas (cria) running around the paddocks and they're gorgeous! So glad you enjoyed your visit and thanks for your kind comments.

“cute alpaca, nice hostess, lovely farm”
Reviewed October 15, 2012

I didn't plan to have this tour originally since I booked the peak farm cruise in Queentown, which has alpacas but turnt out totally not compared with those in this tour.
we learned from the tour that the alpaca has different quality and thus different value. So it explains that the regular farm with sheeps and cows usually don't have high quality alpaca.
the farm is located in a nice place overlooking the harbor. Alpaca, grass, mountain, water, sky, clouds, just imagine...
the hostess is very nice. She shared broad knowledge and encouraged us to interact with alpaca. And she is very generous and nice to offer posting to China the alpaca wool neckerchief that I bought from her farm and left in her house carelessly.

So glad you both enjoyed the tour. It was absolutely no problem posting your lovely scarf to you. We plan to have an online shop available early next year. Our farmstay accommodation will be open in December and we hope to see you again if you return to New Zealand for another holiday!

“Super Day in Akaroa”
Reviewed June 22, 2012

We were on a cruise just walking on the pier when we came upon the Alpaca sign. We took the tour.We were picked up and driven through the beautiful countryside to the Alpaca farm. We were escorted and were able to get up close and personal with these lovely animals. Along with a great deal of information we fell in love with the Alpacas. Take the tour you will feel like family.
Upon our return we will put the Alpacas on our list.

“Fantastic scenery, adorable alpacas, highlight of our trip!”
Reviewed January 5, 2012

This was the most pleasant surprise for us and ended up being a highlight of our trip.

We had no idea what to do in Akaroa when we got there. We know this is not exactly what New Zealand is known for, but the kids fell in love with the picture of the alpaca in the poster, so we went for it. My elderly parents initially, were not as enthusiastic.

The bus picked us up around 12:30pm. The driver gave a short tour and narrative of the town, which was good, because my dad couldn’t really walk around town so much. The bus headed down the road towards Christchurch, then at a certain point, turned and climbed up the mountain at a steep angle till we reached a shed/ barn. Frank and Anya and their daughter, the farm’s owners, were there to greet us. There was nothing commercial about this place. It felt like being invited to a friend’s farm. There were a few alpacas in the shed. They were simply adorable! We were allowed to lead them out to the fields and higher up the mountain, where even more alpacas allowed us to touch and hug them. The view was breathtaking spectacular! My earlier unenthusiastic mom felt like twirling around and singing “Climb Every Mountain”. We stayed much longer than we planned, while Frank and Anya talked about their alpacas, their move from Auckland, their plans for their farm, etc. They were a lovely and warm family.

Soon we returned to the barn, and had some refreshments before leaving. The driver brought us to a photo stop, then to the cheese factory before bringing us back to town.

It turned out to be our most memorable experience on this trip
