We sailed in on the Diamond Princess for the day and docked in Akaroa. In getting off the cruise ship, we noticed that the harbor tours connected with the cruise ship were packed. Finding Tony and Coast Up Close was awesome. There were only 4 of us that went out that day, and it was a beautiful day in the harbor. Tony grew up in the area, and knows where the dolphins, penguins, and fur seals are. He has a very comfortable boat with lots of indoor and outdoor spaces. He was very good at ensuring we were back in time to make our connection back to the cruise ship. A very good value for such a fun day.

I recommend you run off the cruise ship and onto this boat.

We joined Tony on his boat on Jan 4th to explore the coast of Akaroa. We wanted something small and personal rather than the bigger 'pack em in like sardines' affair and we were not disappointed. Tony has 'Steve Irwin type' charisma and enthusiasm for the his local wildlife - his knowledge and desire to make sure every guest had a great time were clearly evident. We learned about the coast line and wildlife together, saw the wonderful dolphins, baby seals and gorgeous cheeky penguins. We wouldn't hesitate to recommend Tony's trip to anyone. Don't be seduced by the 'free fish and chips' advertised on the bigger boats. You can get that on land. Whilst you're at sea, you want a great wildlife adventurer and life-long lover of the wildlife he so clearly cares about. Thanks Tony, we'll be back! Sally, Randal and Zach (from HK)

Tony showed us around the bay and he explained about bird life, seals, dolphins and the rock formation. It was a very personal experience, more than the big touristy boats in the bay could offer, I think.
There were 12 people on our boat (max is 18) and that's perfect.
We saw the dolphins playing around the boat. Tony does not approach them, he lets them choose wether they want to approach us.
He let one of the children steer the boat and gave us warm jackets when he saw we were cold.
Very nice guy. A great trip!

What an amazing tour of the bay and coast. Captain Tony, what an enthusiastic and knowledgeable guy. Full of stories about Akaroa, its history and how the environment has changed over time. OH! and as he sort of makes up each tour as the conditions and options present themselves, we saw many many dolphins and seals and penguins. Fun and worth every dollar. His boat is kept tip top and very clean.

When arriving in Akaroa on a cruise ship, we had no plans, so after browsing the options for tours around Akaroa we were recommended this small, personal tour. The captain, Tony is a wonderful character with passion and love for the coastal areas around Akaroa, his boat seems to attract the wildlife and the dolphins seem to come from everywhere to play alongside. He also has lots of first hand information about the area and is genuinely keen to introduce you to its beauty. Our daughter ( 5) had a wonderful time and spent the next few days talking about Captain Tony's boat. We couldn't have been happier with the time spent with Tony in Akaroa. Highly recommended.
