We booked this ahead of time via the Akaroa central booking web site. Since they aren't the actual provider, it takes time with back and forth emails. A little frustrating at times, but finally got it booked and it was well worth it. In fact, my wife and I agree, this was probably the highlight of our cruise through New Zealand.

Instructions were to try to be first ones off ship, and since we tender, this can be tricky. It turned out all 8 folks, 6 cruisers and 2 land based tourists, were on time. We met Robin and off we went. He took us over about 125 km of roads that are part of his normal route. So many breathtaking vistas and plenty time stop and out. Got to spend a bit of time at some the better vistas. Robin would stop anywhere you asked if it was safe.

Stopped about 2.5 hours into trip for a little picnic brunch of tea/coffee, all instant. A bunch of crackers with 2 excellent home made jams, and some home made muffins. The cruise line could use some pointers from Robin's wife. And she should consider selling some of it ;-)

Kept delivering mail and finally stopped at a nice beach, with a surprise waiting. Unknown to Robin, there was a fairly young yellow eyed penguin just walking along beach, not a care in the world. We got within 5 feet and he could care less. Amazing experience that rarely happens. Finished the mail run and he dropped us in town, where we strolled back through the shops, about 10 minutes to tenders. If you didn't want to be dropped, he'd take you right to where the tenders depart. Great day. Excellent tour Robin!

On March 17, 2014, six of us delivered the mail with Robin to the Eastern Bays. We saw some of the most spectacular scenery ever. This is a beautiful part of the world and Robin was proud to show it off. He is a great ambassador/guide. Some of the highlights included a walk on Le Bons beach, a morning tea by the roadside consisting of a selection of teas, plum cake (homemade by Robin's wife), cheese and crackers, jam, etc. While Robin delivered the mail on the porch of an old dance hall by Starvation Gully Road, we explored the inside. I felt like I was back in WW II. We were all enchanted by the experience. My husband proclaimed this the best excursion he has ever taken!

Like to do something memorable and yet unique when you travel? This private mail run tour is just that and so much more! A party of 6 of us spent 5 wonderful hours with Robin of "Eastern Bays Scenic Mail Runs". Yes, I did say Mail Run because you go along with Robin as he delivers his mail on the scenic eastern bays of Akaroa, New Zealand.
You see much more than you could view on any other tour and you learn about the people and Robin himself. You even had a chance to meet some of the people he delivers his mail to and some of the community buildings in the many little roads off the beaten path. We even stopped for midmorning tea and sweets prepared by his wife at a picnic table in a fabulous spot in Akaroa.
If you are looking for something unique and a wonderful way to learn about people, this is the tour for you. You get beautiful sights and a relaxed, fun tour at a reasonable price.

This is a great private tour. The mailman, school bus driver, conservation warden, and farmer spent 6 hrs showing us the places and people on the ridges and bays around Akaroa. His wife made us morning tea. He told us history, opinions, and introduced us to some of the people on his mail run. The price was reasonable. The views magnificent . The length and pace of the tour was relaxed and left time for a stroll back to the ship if we wished. A perfect day in Akaroa.

A fascinating and different way to see the area surrounding Akaroa. The 5 hour trip went amazingly quickly, beautiful scenery over every hill and round every corner. Robin gave us a real insight into life in this quite remote area. Excellent snack lunch with home made cakes, cheese chutney, made by his wife Jo. They even sent us the recipe.
