This was our first taste of New Zealand. We stayed in the Summer House which was lovely it felt almost as if you were sleeping in the garden itself. Waking up to the bird song, we even had a clematis which had grown through into the inside and was flowering beautifully. Breakfast on the elevated patio with wonderful views towards the lake was a real treat, as was the food itself. We enjoyed comparing notes with the other guests and getting tips for our trip which was just beginning. Annie was very helpful with recommendations for restaurants and the dolphin trip, as well as telling us all about her experiences of the earthquake. We would certainly recommend this B&B to anyone.

Room Tip: We loved the Summer House.

Mulberry House is beautifully restored and the gardens are lovely. This is the only good thing we can say about our stay. When we arrived at 2pm no-one was home and the house key was left in the front door with a note to ourselves and another guest to let ourselves in. We left early next morning to find the key had been left there all night. Not very secure or safe. We could not lock the door of the shared bathroom. We were unable to hang any of our clothes in the wardrobe as it was full of children's clothes and we could only leave them in the suitcases on the floor. Nor could would leave anything in the drawers or on top of tables as they were full of clutter. We did not get to try Jack's famous breakfasts as we had to leave early the next day. We were told breakfast was at 8.30am no earlier and when we suggested we help ourselves to a simple continental breakfast there was much reluctance from Jack to do so. We even had to ask for a glass of water and were told not to leave it on the window sill which was the only place without clutter. We only had one chair in our room and would have liked to sit in the lounge but Jack was entertaining his friends (not guests) and made us feel we were imposing. We found out later that he didn't even live at Mulberry House. Of our 16 days in NZ this was the most expensive and most inhospitable place we stayed at and offered the least. Lyn & Sonia, Australia

We were a family of five traveling in the South Island for a week's break and this was our first New Zealand experience and it was wonderful. Anne and Jack were our hosts. We arrived in our hire car late evening and we were all staying in their summer house adjacent to the main house - our own spacious little cottage - perfect. The fire was lit and the cottage very cozy - two queen beds and two singles all with electric blankets - very welcoming. Our hosts had kindly booked us into what turned out to be a very fine restaurant - The Trading Rooms - for dinner and we were not disappointed - definitely not to be missed. Breakfast was delivered to our cottage by our absolutely charming and friendly hosts - home made muesli with lots of chopped fresh fruits and yoghurt, orange juice and toast galore with lots of home preserves and a cooked brekkie prepared in the summer house kitchen - Anne waited on us hand and foot while entertaining and helping us with lots of helpful travel information for the next day drive to Marlborough. Also this great lady had given us super road instructions for leaving the Christchurch airport for Akaroa which made our exit south very easy and effortless. Definitely highly Mulberry House if staying in Akaroa which in itself was just a perfect way to begin a South Island holiday. Go, you will not be disappointed

I am flabbergasted at the rating for service of one of the reviews on Tripadvisor for Mulberry House and am not surprised that the second review gives 5/5 for service. We stayed at Mulberry House and found that both our hosts, Jack and Anne, couldn't have been warmer or more welcoming. We arrived at a time to suit ourselves and left at the time usual for checkout without feeling any pressure. Our stay in Mulberry House was a great experience typical, of so much that is good about New Zealand's Bed and Breakfast establishments.

Pros:
1) Host Jim is friendly, helpful and prepares scrumptious breakfasts.
2) The restored house and guest rooms are lovely, and the gardens are inviting.

Cons:
1) Host Anne treated us like third class guests. The Mulberry House was hosting (ie complimentary accommodations) participants in the local music festival, and while Anne doted on those guests, we felt we were being shooed off. My husband was in our room on an overseas phone call from 9:00 to 9:45 on the morning of our departure (checkout is 10:00). A staff member entered the room at 9:15 and started cleaning. My husband asked if she could return at 10:00, and she left. Anne arrived at our room at 9:30 and stripped the bed and cleaned around us all while my husband was on his call. We were flaberghasted at her rudeness!!

Do yourself a favor and stay at The Giant’s House in Akaroa, and if rooms are unavailable be sure to visit – the house, gardens and artwork are incredible!!!

This was our only negative experience in three months of traveling New Zealand.

Found this place by chance. Just followed the sign off main street.
This is a beautifully restored and maintained villa with a great choice of rooms. Surrounded by peaceful gardens. Great hosts and a classy, legendary breakfast.
