Was at the cook school this week for their French cooking class. Lou and Ant were very hospitable and really know how to make people feel welcome. I did the class by myself and was worried about bing the only individual person there, however Ant assured me that they would take good care of me - and indeed he and Lou did.

Not only was the atmosphere great but the food that Lou taught us to cook was so delicious - you really have to try it. I 100% recommend doing a class

While we were in Akaroa for our wedding, my husband and I arranged to have a cooking competition among friends and family at the Akaroa Cooking School. It was FABULOUS. From the moment I started emailing Lou and Ant many (many) months ago to organize, they were extremely helpful and had wonderful ideas. The night started off with champagne and delicious snacks while our party of 18 trickled in. Once it was announced that we were having a cooking competition, all of our guests got so excited and extremely competitive. I have never experienced so much laughter and fun in 30 minutes. And the judging was very professional (and intenense!).
After the competition, our evening was ready to really begin - with a delicious three-course meal with wine-pairing. The food and service was superb. Every town should be lucky enough to have a venue (and owners) like this to make a memorable evening with friends.

It was January, 14 deg, blowing a gale and raining as we arrived at 9.45am. As we alighted on the dock we were whisked across the road to the Cooking School, our hosts Lou and Anthony along with Kim had tea, coffee and fresh baked pastries waiting.
The ambiance, the food and the wine we could praise for pages but this was only one of the standouts for us. We were with 12 other people we had not previously met and along with our hosts we had a ball. The interaction between the participants, and yes you get your hands involved, the excellent communication skills of Lou, the information provided by Anthony and Kim's seamless organisation made for a wonderful experience. The knowledge gained and our excellent lunch were a bonus. We left at 4pm to a warm and sunny New Zealand afternoon.
If you are going to the area, book early and do it.
Thanks Lou,Ant & Kim.

My partner and I have been to the Akaroa Cooking School three time now and we haven't been our last. The whole experience is delightful. We have done a Gourmet Day, a From the Wharf and recently was a Day in Thailand. All have been superb, food and people.

One arrives at ~10am to be greeted with coffee and some delicious little nibble to get the taste buds going. Then Lou and Ant, your hosts, take you through the preparation of, usually a five or six course, meal. There is no hurry and plenty of chat with the select audience; limited to 12. The limited size of the audience.....sorry, that should be guests, makes the day a get together rather than a class. That is not to say one does not learn, one certainly does. Lou is a top chef and a great teacher.

Once the guests have been shown each of the dishes and plied with bubbly, we sit together while Lou, Ant and their fabulous team, put together the whole meal for all the guests. This intimate meal gives everyone a chance to meet everyone else, and it is funny how there has been a connection found with everyone we have met so far.

Ant plays wine master and has selected a wine for each dish, all locally sourced and all delicious. I am no drinker of white wine, usually preferring a robust Aussie from the Barossa, but each of the whites selected for our Day in Thailand complimented the dishes beautifully. One of the guests, who's name will remain a secret, claimed not to like wine. By the end of the meal she was a complete convert and was scoring the wine from 'delightful' to 'to die for'.

A day at the Akaroa Cooking School is a whole day's entertainment with the most yummy food, great wines and interesting company. Work out the cost per hour and it is the best value going.

There is a good reason the Akaroa Cooking School is ranked in the top ten best cooking schools in the world by Lonely Planet - it is!
