We visited Akaroa on the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice on 24th January. Luckily the weather was really good (we had been warned that it would be very cold and windy). A bit cool out on the harbour but the crew had extra coats on offer if you wanted them.

The crew girls looked after us with a choice of complimentary drinks and a very tasty cookie and answered some of our questions.

The captain was very knowledgeable and gave a very detailed commentary. Meanwhile, Murphy the dog (who wears a life jacket - truly) runs around the decks and barks whenever there are dolphins nearby. One theory is that he is sensitive to the high frequency sounds that the dolphins use to communicate. However he does it, he's pretty good at his job.

We were delighted to see many Hectors Dolphins, as well as fur seals on the rocks and even a glimpse of a penguin. This is one of the best dolphin/whale watching experiences that we have ever had and we highly recommend it. The cost is very reasonable.

You can usually book through shore excursions if you are on a cruise ship, but we went online before we left home and booked it on the net. Couldn't have been easier. The tour goes from the same wharf as where the cruise ship tenders dock but you have to duck into the shop a couple of minutes away to pick up your tickets first.

After being greeted by Murphy as we boarded, the skipper and his associate did much to make us comfortable and began the trip to search for dolphins in the bay. Great commentary and great cookies. Murphy did his dolphin spotting job perfectly and we saw beautiful leaping dolphins. Gorgeous coastline and cliffs hosted great seals. We got really close them and took some amazing pictures. Murphy ignored me at first but by the end of the journey he deigned to let me scratch behind his ears. Absolutely beautiful day on the bay, a marvelous narration of the history of the area. I highly recommend this cruise. Also, you get a chance to look at/or buy the book written about Murphy and his dolphin adventures. I highly recommend buying the book.

We were visiting Akaroa on the Sea Princess cruise ship in December 2012. This was our 7th ocean cruise and I had never seen dolphins or whales...woe is me I was always in the wrong place at the wrong time!!! So other cruise passengers suggested I stay ashore as I might jinx the trip....all in good fun. Anyway we found the dolphins and when I saw the first one everyone cheered!! No more jinx. Thanks to Patsy (who told me to stay in one place) I saw heaps of dolphins that day. What a fantastic experience. We also went out around the heads outside the harbor and saw the most unusual and magnificent geological formations as well as some close up views of the lovely NZ fur seals. The commentary was extremely informative and interesting - a great way to see the harbour. Mark and Patsy were great hosts and helped everyone to have a fabulous experience. Loved the cookies - yum!! Thanks Mark and Patsy for a great time. It was my favourite shore tour!!

Booked a trip in advance via the Internet having found Akaroa Dolphins through the Christchurch Visitor Information site. Emails were answered promptly and everything about the trip was as described. Craig, our captain, a 6th generation New Zealander, was extremely knowledgable and ensured we saw dolphins, seals, cormorants and even a penguin. Murphy the West Highland Terrier, wearing a life jacket, was an excellent member of crew, alerting the Captain when dolphins were near! The boat was the perfect size, comfortable, clean and the refreshments exceeded expectation......Great New Zealand wine (soft drinks too) and yummy home made refreshments. Not only an excellent trip, but the best boat trip we have experienced. The Akaroa Dophin Shop just across from the wharf has a great range of lovely and unusual souvenirs and is really worth a visit. All this and 25 degree sunshine too! Highly recommended.
