Owner description: We started our Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruises back in 1985 and are the original cruise operators so we know the harbour pretty well. Along the way we've been named as the supreme tourism award winner and also hold the Enviro gold award from Qualmark to recognise our dedication to the environment.Your nature cruise will be on the 'Black Cat', a large modern and stable vessel allowing great views of all the scenery and wildlife including dolphins, seals and penguins. If by some chance you do not see dolphins then we will provide a ticket to come again another day. This happens on average 2% of the time across the whole year.We look forward to meeting you and giving you the best stories from the Akaroa Harbour.

“A unique experience to see incredible Hectors Dolphins”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2013

We did the Black Cat Nature Cruise when we visited beautiful Akaroa. The scenary in the harbour is breath taking and the commentary was both entertaining and insightful. The crew were friendly and told us lots of interesting facts. It was a wonderful experience to see Hectors Dolphins, fur seals, little blue penguins and countless numbers of sea birds. We really enjoyed the experience.

“Unique perspective”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 14, 2013

I've explored most the Bank Peninsula, but was surprised by this unique perspective and engaging tour. There are numerous interesting facts and corners of the peninsula of which I'd never been aware. Superb outing and a chance to see Hectors Dolphins, Little Blue and even Yellow Eyed Penguins. Pick a sunny day: very worthwhile.

Thanks for the review! The Akaroa Harbour Nature Cruise really does give you such a great opportunity to see the stunning peninsula in a way only possible by sea.

“Comfortable scenic cruise”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013

Took my niece and partner to Akaroa during the school holidays. A lovely surprise for Catherine who has never been to Akaroa and the Nature Cruise by Black Cat was wonderful. Great scenery and commentary. The day got a bit chilly but plenty of space to hide away from the wind!
Saw some seals, many birds and even a penguin but were unlucky to see any dolphins on the trip.
A 2 hour trip on the water, pays to have warm jacket as weather can change, but making a full day in Akaroa we were prepared.

Hi Jo, thank you for your review. We're glad you enjoyed the trip with your family but sorry to hear you didn't see any of the Hector's dolphins. We operate a dolphin guarantee policy as 98% of our cruises will see them. Please contact me on natasha@blackcat.co.nz if you would like to do the trip again to see the dolphins and I will arrange this for you.

“An amazing experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2013 via mobile

Akaroa was first stop for my wife and I on our honeymoon in new Zealand - and what a way to kick things off! Black Cat Cruises were well organised, friendly and, more importantly, extremely knowledgeable of the local waters. When I asked how they track dolphins I was a little surprised that it was all on visual. I was even more surprised when, once out on the open water, it only took our guides about ten minutes to spot a school of three playing together. In total we had three slots in the water with the dolphins. This was due to the strong currents dragging us and boat out of position of where the dolphins were - extra credit goes to our guides here. The experience was truly great and I'd recommend a it to anyone visiting Akaroa. Black Cat are definitely the guys to go with!

“Excellent Attraction”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 18, 2013

Our friends and us recently experienced the professional Black Cat experience. The trip was extremely well commentated giving the location of the Dolphins as well as some very interesting history of the Akaroa harbour and surrounds. We must complement the very professional approach from the crew who made you feel comfortable at all times during the trip. The refreshments available on board were again very adequate and added to an extremely enjoyable experience.
