“Great location, lots of character”

really enjoyed our stay here even though it was brief. we had a twin room which had a small bar fridge, TV and vcr - good stuff if you have nothing to do at night and just want to watch a video.

floors could've been vacuumed a little more, but there wasn't any bad smell, so can't complain, really. beds were comfortable and it wasn't too noisy that evening. kitchen looked grotty and i would not have wanted to cook in there. the place looks very colourful and lively and the staff are really helpful. i would recommend for brief stays if you want to be near the famous Strip in Fremantle.

I was one of the long-term residents as mentioned in the last review, living at Pirates for 3 months. I loved it. I lived in a 6-person co-ed dorm that faced the street. The advantage of not having your room face the courtyard is that you won't be kept awake if you need to sleep instead of going to one of the awesome themed parties in the courtyard. If you're only staying for a few days, you can sleep later, so you have to check out the parties. But if you're staying for longer, and maybe need to work, it's nice to be able to sleep if you need to.

The bathrooms are great. They have 2 private ones upstairs with great showers. The shared one downstairs offers private shower stalls and are fine if the private ones are occupado. Also good for brushing your teeth with friends.

The beds are very comfy and the bedding is nice and comfortable. There are lockers for each person which is great for storage and keeping things locked, if you're paranoid like me. The cleaning staff does a great job cleaning the rooms, hallways, bathrooms, courtyard and kitchen every day.

If I had a complaint, it would be that the kitchen is too small if everyone is cooking at the same time. You may have to time dinner preparation so you don't try to cook with everyone. But everyone gets their own bag to put in the fridge, and a box for dry stuff, which is great for storing groceries.

Unfortunately Vaughan only took over in the last month of my stay, but he is a great owner and manager. He arranged volleyball games, and other outings, to places like Rottnest Island. His parties, whether at Pirates, or at a club after taking a party bus are awesome.

I arrived here alone, was joined by a friend, who left earlier than me. But it didn't matter, because I made friends, in the long time residents and also with the staff. Freo is an awesome place to live, hang out and chill, and Pirates is an awesome place to meet the people and have fun.

I had never stayed at a hostel before I checked into Pirates and have always been wary of staying at one, thinking that I was both too old and not willing to compromise my high standards of cleanliness, but if Pirates gives any indication of what a backpacking experience is like, I am completely sold and regret not having done this earlier. The guests at Pirates are a mix of short and long term residents, ranging from 1 day to 8 months (and maybe longer). The long-term residents give the place a real family feel and welcome the new guests with warmth and enthusiasm. However, the great vibe that I experienced shortly after arriving at Pirates is attributable not just to its residents, but to its owner Vaughan, the patriarch of this institution. He not only does an impeccable job managing the hostel, but fully integrates himself with the guests and takes it upon himself to ensure that every person who stays at Pirates has a positive experience.

I stayed in a 6 (bunk) bed women's room located at the back of the hostel. It was spacious and well-maintained. There are 3 bathrooms in the hostel - a large bathroom with 2 toilets, 3-4 showers, and 2 sinks; a single women-only bathroom with shower; and a unisex single bathroom with shower. For hostel standards, the bathrooms are quite clean, meaning no bugs or bad odors, but a heavy dose of Tilex would do wonders.

The staff was always happy to answer questions and suggest things to do. The hostel has an internet cafe in front and also provides free wireless. The location of Pirates is right in the middle of Freo and close to everything.

I don't have any negative comments to make, but want to note that Pirates is a very loud and festive place. For example, when a party is held (which is usually on a weekend night), there is no escape from the blaring music. Also, because the rooms in the back open out to the street, all of the street noise, including the chatter and music from the cafe next door comes straight into your room. Thus, if you are looking for a quiet place to relax, Pirates may not be the right accommodation for you. However, if you are looking to meet potential traveling partners and make friends, Pirates is an ideal place to make those types of connections.
