My first experience with a backpackers hostel and I liked it. Very warm and a little bit commune like atmosphere at very good location. Though I would deffinetly reccomend earplugs for a good night sleep ;)

This will be a short review because I'm a lazy writer (I'm more of a numbers guy)

From reading up on some of the more negative reviews from this site, it seems that the main complaints were to do with weekend night noise levels, and cleanliness.

If you want to stay here, this has to be taken in context, it is a fairly small building with about 50 backpackers inside, all looking to enjoy life. So this means that it is impossible to keep the place clean every minute of the day, although the staff make every effort to keep it so, particularly during the day. (Although the Frenchies could do a better cleanup after their en-mass cook-ups, lol) There is most definitely a party atmosphere on Fri-Sun nights, so if you want a quieter night's sleep, ask for a room change to a quieter part of the hostel, and/or wear ear-plugs and eye covers (keep them from plane).

Pirates isn't just a party hostel, the owner runs some excellent and very generous day excursions, from wine-tasting (yay!) - to climbing walls - to simple yet inspiring sunset viewpoints. I quickly got accustomed to the life-style there, especially since living and socializing in the hostel brought back some excellent work opportunities, both through new friends and the job board. It felt very safe there, as the owner does keep an eye out for those who mess around to the point where it would upset others....

So if you are a backpacker in Freo looking for a good time, I couldn't recommend this place more.

I know some of the hostels in Freo and I always prefered the one with atmosphere, good people, not too big + a level of service and quality. So this is the perfect place. The owner is a traveler himself and organises great trips for his guests and you can tell he knows what its like to be a backpacker by looking at the hostel.
Also a great place of u lookin for a job ;)

Great place to stay. Friendly & helpful staff. Cleanest hostel I've stayed in. Fun hostel goers, very sociable place. The only thing is there are parties going on in the backyard till 3am everyday. So if you are after a quiet hostel this probably isn't the place to stay.

This backpacker is nice and has good atmosphere.
I cannot believe how prices have gone up In the area over the last few years!!
For not much more money....get a B&B or similar.
We came into Freo after driving from Geraldton (north). EVERYTHING was booked out so we ended up here eventually.
Location is great, close to everything in Freo. Just be careful around train station... A lot of suspect caracters. A couple of well stocked supermarkets close by.
Ok ....but will plan my next visit a bit better next time;-)

Room Tip: I think all dorms look the same.

Great place to stay! Very homey and lovely to meet some people. Most people are living there and working so it is the ideal place to stay if you would like to stay for a few weeks or even to live there. The staff are friendly. There is a real family atmosphere. Mainly british and french people but also some Aussies and kiwis. It was great though.. everyone was very friendly.

Nice hostel with sweet staffs. They maintain this backpacker so well. Everything is fantastic and awesome, except that some of the backpackers are rude, they party too much. And it will be noisy during the weekend.
