Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

I recently visited the prison and "did some time" for about an hour. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable to the point and was able to recite huge amounts of information. The story of the prison and its eventual closure was interesting and provided a glimpse until life in such a harsh environment. It would have been nice to learn more of the only successful escape but I had plenty to digest already.

Its not for the faint hearted, claustrophobic, vertigo sufferers or those scared of the dark. It is for the more adventures types who don't mind getting harnessed up and climbing down a set of vertical ladders to the depths of the prison tunnels. Our tour guide gave an interesting and humerus account of the history of the tunnels, and the gruelling punishments the convicts were made to endure. Well worth the fee.

Fremantle Prison is Western Australlia’s only World Heritage Listed Building. With convenient meter parking, it is also adjacent to Fremantle Markets for Fri/Sat/Sun visitors. The info does say “step back in time to experience the good and bad of our history”. Sorry, but it was all bad in Fremantle Prison!!
We were happy doing the “Doing Time” guided tour and have to say it was EXCELLENT. This was mainly because of our male guide – Brett, from memory, who has evidently been there for some years and his boisterous, forceful, interesting and outstanding tour made it what it was. Excellent. The info wasn’t wrapped in cotton wool and we came out feeling a bit worse for wear after being reminded of our violent past. School kids were there in groups although Brett did seem to want them locked up!
I would have liked to do the Torch Tour, but didn’t have time. Ask Brett or other guides about ghosts!
OK to photograph. Weddings also held in the chapel although for the life of me, I wonder why any happy couple would want tie the knot in Fremantle Prison? Interestingly, the Ten Commandments scribed in the Chapel had been changed from “Though Shalt Not Kill” to “Though Shalt Not Murder” to alleviate their conscience for killing the odd perpetrators of evil as well as a number of innocent.
Definitely recommended for adults and kids. Shop and cafe with goodies for after the tour.
Adults $19 (Concession avble) Family of five $53

A trully wonderful tour looking at the birth of a nation from a colony.

Our guide John was full of knowledge and humour as we walked the paths of many before us.

$20 for an adult and $11 for a child is definitely worth it and I'd pay it just to talk with David Campbell(83), ex-Super and now guide who stood at the gate.

But GO you should to Fremantle Gaol. Right in the middle of the city this imposing ediface is a must see. Take a tour and hear the scary interesting history from the excellent tour guides. Shocking but also amusing tales. Dont be left behind, you never know who or what may be lurking.
