Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

We recently did the Torchlight tour here and it was our first visit to the prison also. It was excellent, highly recommend it although not for the faint hearted!! The tour guide was excellent and told lots of interesting stories about past inmates and interesting facts about the place also. The other staff there were also very helpful and a good laugh. Definitely a must do if in Fremantle.

A visit to a prison whilst on holiday may not sound like much fun, but our visit to Fremantle Prison was one of the highlights of our trip to Fremantle and Perth. The prison is a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Australian Convict Sites. We decided to visit the prison on our first afternoon as it is a short walk from the Fremantle city centre. There are several different tours available which have different requirements in terms of mobility availability and age. We were able to take the “Doing Time” tour within about 45 minutes of arriving (AUD53 for a family ticket). In the meantime, there were several buildings to explore around the main gates with exhibitions of prison life and also prisoner art.

The tour gave an insight into prison life throughout the life of the prison from 1850 when construction started to 1991 when it was eventually closed. The tour starts in the prison reception area which is preserved as it was when it closed. The guide gave an explanation of how prisoners were processed when they arrived in the prison and then progresses through the various areas of the prison, describing prison life (sometimes in harsh detail) for each area. The visit to the cells is very interesting as the set up of the cells at various periods throughout the history of the prison has been recreated. Descriptions of prison life are interspersed with stories about major events such as the prison riots which destroyed large parts of the prison. The tour also visits the chapel, the isolation wing and the gallows room with descriptions of a prisoner’s last moments. It all makes for a very thought provoking and interesting visit. Only minor issue was the guides delivery, which was very fast - I doubt overseas visitors would be able to follow or understand much.

With an overseas visitor in tow we made our first visit to the Fremantle Prison as a West Aussie I have wanted to do this for AGES.
We did the Escape Tour with our OS guest and it was great to hear the tales of infamous characters from my childhood.
I returned with the kids during the week to do the Day in a life tour with the kids. Our tour guide was a blast she had the kids from the minute she walked in the door getting them to sit in line then pretend strip searching them. Our group was more kids than adults and they all loved it.
It was great to see the history of the stories that I grew up with and I can't wait to do a night tour.
Would LOVE to do a real historical tour about the convicts I hope they add it maybe in a few years to keep things fresh and so I can return.
I would have this on a top 10 list now of things for visitors to WA to do.

Having done the prison tour a number of times I think it is one of the best examples of WA history that we can touch and experience.
