Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

Visited here twice for two of the tours (They have about 5 different ones). The place is truly amazing and the guides are full of interersting stories and facts.
The conditions for prisoners must have been truly horrid especially when you consider it was still a working prison up till 1991 - No sinks or toilets in the cells just a tin bucket.
Mind you serves them right I suppose - if modern prisons were like this there might be less crime.
Well wortha visit.

Thank Andy D

When visitors suggested we go along on a 'Tour' of the Fremantle Prison I wasn't all that interested, as I was born here (Perth) and grew up visiting Fremantle, which often took us past the spooky walls of the Prison. We knew it was there and of course it was operating, into the early 1990's.
We went on the Tour and found it amazing, mostly because once inside and guided through the system itself, by some of the actual Guards themselves, who 'tell it as it was' - you cannot believe that you go way back into the 1800's. And this Prison closed in the 1990's. We understand Prison must be tough, but this place is definitely worth a visit - certainly also for locals who are only familiar with the spooky Walls, as I was.

Fremantle prison is a must for all holiday makers visiting the Perth area.
Upon arrival you're greeted by prison guards who inform you that you will be taking part in a full prison experience. This includes lining up and learning the 'do's and don'ts' of prison life.
It truly is a wonderful morning or afternoon filled with interesting and thought provoking facts and information.
I'm a Perth resident and never hesitate to take a visitor to the Prison.
The only down side is that the tour doesn't last a little longer. It would be nice to have the opportunity to spend a little time exploring the grounds after the guided tour has finished.
Some moments on the tour can be quite confronting and almost a little harrowing. Be prepard.

The prisoners built it themselves. When brought over from England they had to build their own live in cells. Women on one end, men and children, young as 9, on the other. Cells very small 4x6 maybe. Grounds nice but razor wire scares me.
