Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

“Laughter takes away the tragedy”

We did a torch light evening tour of the prison with teenager in tow. She had the best time, enjoying the information, the jokes and the scary moments. It's an impressively well preserved set of buildings and the tour guide was entertaining....which dispelled any of the darkness that was implicit in the place itself and the time of night.

“Tunnels Tour - World Heritage, the adventurous way”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 4, 2013

History can get boring, but not when you mix it up with adventure tours! This tour takes around 2.5hrs, you must be over 12, and pass a alcohol breath test at the start. If you have a bad back, suffer claustrophobia or are afraid of heights then give this a miss and go the regular tours (Doing Time Tour).

In the hot perth weather you escape down a 20 meter ladder into the cool tunnels under the prison. You are completely locked in by harness - at no point do you detach from this while climbing, each ladder tracks your harness onto the next - 100% safe and fun. Although not essential this would be more fun with a partner. As you descend facing your partner you can pick your speed, go steady as a team or speed down, you just meet the guide at the bottom. There is about 20 minutes of walking around crouched, bad backs beware (but my mum with bad knees and back did it fine).

Then you get into a small row boat with your partner and are guided around the tunnels. The guides are informative and encourage questions. There are a few cockroaches and other crawlys on the walls but you can get under the few spots quickly if it worries you. My favourite moment was probably turning off our lights to discover complete darkness or feeling the fresh cool water that surrounds you (about 1m deep).

This tour will change your idea of labour as you explore the maze of tunnels dug by the prisoners. You cannot take any loose items, so no photos. A photo opportunity is offered at the end in your daggy gear (hard hat, harness, life jacket, overalls and boots). Lockers and equipment are provided. There is a cafe on site, some free galleries and other tours available including the torchlight tour (torchlight tour of the prison), great escapes tour (attempted prison escapes) and the doing time tour (explore the prison as it was in the 1850s through to closure in 1991). This tour cost $60 for adults and $40 for children (over 12). Tours run daily at 9.00am, 9.45am, 10.40am, 12.20pm, 1.40pm, 2.40pm and 3.25pm.

Fremantle is like another city, so when you finish you can wonder for a shop or my favourite....head to the little creatures breweries. You could even get the ferry to Rottnest Island.
