“Fascinating maritime archeology”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

Batavia Gallery is a key display featuring a section of the Dutch ship and some reconstructed cargo forming a stone arch. The 1629 wreck is one of intrigue, murder and what many would say is rough justice. The gallery leads to further maritime archeology including an unearthed skeleton labelled (facetiously) Australian's first settler.
The museum is established appropriately in a former shipping warehouse, one of Fremantle's many heritage buildings. Entry is by donation. A good selection of books are for sale.

“The Shipwreck Galleries”

I had read 'The Bratavia' before visiting the Galleries and would recommend you doing so. It really gives you a greater appreciation of what it must have been like to travel out to Western Australia at the time and the suffering of those in peril on the Indian Ocean. The people running the galleries are very knowledgeable and helpful. I would also recommend watching the video that plays upstairs. The last thing we did before leaving lovely Freo after 3 months in WA was not a disappointment and I would recommend it.

1. Free
2. You might learn a thing or two
3. Free
How can you complain? It's free.
It's close to food. Just get out and get a bite if you're bored, not saying that you will be.
