Description: Right in the heart of Fremantle, Portorosa is the Italian Restaurant you don't expect. Using the best available local ingredients, our Chef creates a seasonal menu featuring classic dishes, bursting with a great Sicilian flavor. Our menu is based on the Italian tradition of preparing food. We combine simplicity with the best ingredients of the season, including high quality olive oil, locally grown local vegetables and fruits, and seasonal specials of seafood, poultry, meat and game. In addition to the regular menu, our specials menu features a variety of soups, antipasti, pasta and main courses.

Have been here several times and keep coming back. Food is good value, staff friendly and attentive. This time we had the barramundi special and veal scallopine - the fish was cooked perfectly and the veal tasty. Wasn't very busy but it was a Wednesday night. Can get a bit noisy due to the wood floors, but overall a great little spot!

Chose this restaurant from all the glowing reviews. We disregarded the small number poor reviews in order to try for ourselves.

Sunday evening in Freo was packed. This restaurant is a big, spacious room and the noise level was such that you couldn't hold a conversation without shouting (which everyone else was doing!)

The wait staff were run off their feet and most (if not all) were very difficult to understand as English was not their first language however they were pleasant enough. The lady with a French accent was quite helpful and friendly.
There wasn't any water on the table so we had to ask and the male waiter seemed annoyed and rushed when we only asked for 'tap water' instead of, presume? paid for bottled water.

The food:
Italian? Yes but have made just as good at home. The antipasto platter to start with was ok
but too much greens (trendy lettuce) and very sparse cheese and meats as advertised on the menu. Not worth the $20.

Out of the 4 mains we had, the veal medallions were quite 'chewy' and if you took the pile of mash potato out of the dish the sauce and veg didn't amount to much. The mushroom sauce tasted ok but was not what you call outstanding. The small amount of fresh veg was disappointing.

The crumbed veal on a bed of spag bol was very dried out and looked "pre prepared". The other dishes were stock standard Italian and the same as any other restaurant that calls itself "Italian". The 'cappa strip' in Fremantle has plenty of these right next to each other so you would think that competition would prevail but I guess with the crowds they don't bother. Perhaps all owned by the same 'family'.

The Portorosa could be very good. The decor is nice, very Mediterranean and has views out onto an al fresco area and busy street. The tables don't have table cloths and you are 'asked' to "hang on to your cutlery" as new ones were not offered.

There is no dress code here, come in what you like, board shorts, thongs (flip flops) and as the place is licensed it has a high BYO wine corkage of $6 per bottle.

We went as a foursome to celebrate a birthday and took the time to go clean and dressed but needn't have bothered. This is just a large fast food, noisy, quick turnover cafe, not a place to linger over and have a conversation.

We won't be rushing back.

Stumbled across this restaurant today, after trying to have lunch at several others. First one we went to was closed, second one had no eftpos, third one had no high chairs or kids menu & awful service. So happy we found Portorosa!!! We approached the restaurant & began reading the menu which was on display at the entry. Such a great idea to have the menu on display like that, so would be patrons are able to see if the menu suits them before entering and being seated, only to find out otherwise. Right away the waiter outside saw us and greeted us warmly. My husband asked if they had high chairs and the waiter very cheerfully said yes. We decided to go in, the waiter asked where we would like to be seated, showed us to a table and went and got a high chair for our little one straight away. A waitress warmly greeted us and gave us menus and shortly after took our drink orders. We ordered our meals and they all arrived to the table together and so quickly! The waitress brought us a cold bottle of water to the table, without us having to request one. We were so impressed by the service and all of the meals were absolutely beautiful. My son ordered the pizza tropicana from the children's menu and said that it was the best pizza that he's ever eaten. The three of us had to help him finish it, as the serving size was so generous. We all agreed with my son, it was the best pizza we had ever eaten too! The ham on the pizza was so finely shaven - beautiful! So much better than the thick chunky ham that you get on pizzas elsewhere. And the pineapple pieces were large, juicy and so flavor some! The wood fired base was amazing! The spaghetti bolognaise and neopolitana pasta dishes were fantastic-very flavorful and delicious. My husband said that his steak sandwhich was the same. Even the bowl of chips that we ordered were lovely, with no burnt unedible ones in it - which is always normally the case elsewhere. The chips were golden and perfectly cooked. We were all so impressed with the service and food at this restaurant. The staff really are wonderfull, so warm, friendly and welcoming. We loved that we were dinning in an Italian restaurant, with italian music playing in the background, we got to choose from an huge selection of authentic italian dishes on the menu and be served by Italian wait staff. My only regret is not ordering desert, the desert menu looked anazing! Credit to the owners / management for running their business with exceptional staff. Can't wait to return and can't recommend Portorosa highly enough!!! :)

Really disappointed with this restaurant. Came here based on the reviews and also when we walked passed, the place was buzzing. The food was awful, just hope it doesn't make us sick. We all left more than half our meals. We noticed other diners had done the same. Definitely wont be coming here again.
