“Not what I expected”
Reviewed March 25, 2014

After hearing such hype about this hotel I was disappointed in the standard of the hotel. It is in a great location for exploring Fremantle but a very basic offering in terms of rooms and the staff. It is very outdated and needs some TLC. I got the room with a free voucher after booking some flights through flight centre otherwise I would not have paid £130 for a night at this hotel. It was a 2-3 star standard and would be somewhere that I would stay again if it was under £50 per night and I needed to be this central.

Fremantle is my favourite place in PER & I try to stay at the Esplanade as the location is central & close to everything that Freo has to offer. I got a great deal from Agoda for $189 & this is the 3rd time I have stayed here.

Service is also friendly & most importantly - efficient. I have stayed at many hotels & so many you are waiting for up to 15-20 just be served.

Valet service is reasonably priced at $29 & saves you trying to find a park & paying the astronomical prices in the car parks.

This time I was given room 215 which was above reception & accessed by the lift directly in the foyer, the room was fabulous. Large with a balcony looking over the street (although wasnt nosiy at all & I stayed there on a Sat night) I found it funny that the other two times I have stayed I paid over $215 & stayed in rooms at the back that were quite a distance from the lobby & yet I paid such a bargain price & got a better room (?) maybe I was extra nice to the staff :) The balcony is sectioned off however it is not private so you can see people if they choose to sit on it as well. Didnt bother me as I didnt really use it.

I didnt have breakfast this time around however I made use of a lovely bottle of white in the mini bar.

I think the Esplanade is very reasonably priced & a fantastic stay when in Freo.

A great central location for exploring the City with the tram stop right outside.
Our welcome was polite and courteous, as were all the staff we encountered during our stay. Plenty of friendly smiling faces.
Our very clean and comfortable room overlooked the inner courtyard, a good thing from the point of traffic noise in a hotel with antiquated glazing and fronting a main road.
We were surprised to find that the only parking available was Valet style at just under $30 aud a night but at least this was better than struggling with the pay as you go complexities of Fremantle's public parking. In a hotel of this standard we would expect to find complimentary bottled water in the room but here it was a 'plus' item. The sound proofing between the room and the corridor also left a bit to be desired - we did not hear a peep out of our neighbours but could hear verbatim the conversations of guests passing by.
The buffet Atrium restaurant does excellent food, recommended.
We would have rated this a 3.5 star hotel but the friendliness of the staff kicked it back to 4!

Room Tip: Inner courtyard facing rooms are quieter.

Pleased to see you generally enjoyed the hotel experience and the service was to your liking. Sorry to see the noise outside the room carried through, the doors are not new and may need work down the track to improve this issue. The buffet is great and does provide plenty of variety for the guests who like to graze...

We arrived during the annual Chilly festival and the streets were bursting with visitors and unless you know your way getting around by car was not easy although we choose to park the car at the hotel when we eventually found the entry.

Room was great and the staff were all very helpful. Although we did not dine there that night, we did stop off at the bar for a night cap on the way home. We were after a particular port and it did take some 15 minutes to produce the port we were after. This was due to the bar stock being empty and an issue with the cellar keys. However, when we finally got the port the bar manager who had been excellent arranged extra port in the glasses and when we went to pay insisted that 'the house" pick up the tab because of the delay. Now that is customer service and we greatly appreciated the gesture. Well done!

Room Tip: We were only overnighting so did not really get to see the whole layout and use all the hotel facili...

Very pleased to read you were here to enjoy the Araluen Chilli Festival that the hotel proudly sponsors, it is such a great spectacle and an amazing variety of chilli and beverages to enjoy along with Latino music! Nice to see you took advantage of the hotel parking and walked around the city, much easier..sorry it was so difficult to get to the hotel due to the road closures etc. I am glad the bar manager made up for the poor attention to detail in not having your port ready when requested..hope we see you back again for the next trip our way.

Prior to heading out on a 16 night cruise, we stayed 2 nights at the Esplanade in Fremantle, Australia. The front desk staff treated us like they were upset that we would bother them. However, there was a young lady at the bell station who was most helpful and made up for the rudeness of the front desk. The room was "just OK", nothing special! Our balcony overlooked the building directly across the street, so our view was disappointing. The bed was way too hard and very uncomfortable! The only good part of this stay was that you cannot beat the location. Everything possible was within walking distance, which was great! There's not a lot of hotel venues in Fremantle, so I guess this hotel can treat the customer as they wish.

So nice you stayed with us on your recent cruise experience. Sorry to read the front desk staff was not friendly, this really disappoints me when so much emphasis is made about this exact point with these employees, not only when employed (most of them are quite new), but also with their induction and training! I will ensure this is shared with the team and training continues..

It seems to be theme with Rydges, run them till you can't possibly get any more out of it and then think about upgrading.

The bed was hard, vallet parking is your only option, and there's a strange smell.

But it's in a great location with plenty of options for eating out

Sad to see a Top Producer with 176 odd reviews take this perspective on the hotel with little thought to the fact that the hotel was purchased last Jan and we have been managing it for just over a year! In that time the entire ground floor was upgraded, the fire system replaced and upgrade to code, the wifi system replaced, the guest lifts upgraded and brought up to code, the resort pool upgraded, the entire outside of the hotel painted, all the in room TVs replaced with new Sony LCDs, 70 odd rooms brand new Rydges Dream beds just installed.. The hotel was owned and operated for 21 years prior to us taking over by an independent operator, we have prioritised and spent in the millions since takeover in trying to improve facilities and services to make the hotel safe and comfortable for our guests at the same time changing the culture and service in line with the Rydges branding...it is personally disappointing when reading comments of this nature with the efforts made by the owners and team to improve the guest experience..
