Esplanade Hotel Fremantle - by Rydges
Ranked #3 of 8 Hotels in Fremantle
Reviewed January 16, 2014

Lovely looking hotel from the outside and marketing, so I had high expectations. Unfortunately these were not met. The room was nice enough; it was clean and we had a balcony, but the corridor areas were tired and shabby and felt a little institutional. Trays and plates and so on from room service were also outside rooms for a long period of time - two days in the case of one room opposite and another down the corridor. Signs and so on in the hotel were not always clear. From our room we could access the spa and pool area via a fire exit, but the signs stopped mid way between the stairs and the exit!

I would also echo others comments about the attitude of reception staff. On the three occasions I spoke with reception, I felt that all had better things to do with their time than deal with my queries, checking in or out or worse still, asking for a taxi to be booked which although was offered as a service, made me feel rude for asking!

The pool area was nice but one jacuzzi was broken and some gym equipment was not well maintained - one bike didn't work and another was temperamental.

We didn't eat here as seemed rather expensive and we were keen to explore the local area which was lovely and the hotel was well placed for this.

In summary, disappointing. It did not feel like a four star establishment and certainly sells itself as a much higher pitch than the reality. That said I would stay here again, but don't expect the luxury the marketing would lead you to believe.

Sorry you were unable to locate the pool at the hotel, there are two pools, the larger resort pool located centrally on the ground floor in the heart of the hotel normally is easy to locate and will review the new signage to ensure it is clear for everyone, It sounds like the gym equipment needs attention and have passed this onto the maintenance manager to ensure it being checked regularly. There have been a few comments regarding the reception personnel as you have noted that have been addressed, I would probably not generalise that this is common however is a concern that you have also needed to make note of this item and will get looked at with some more training with the staff in the area. I also would say the marketing and photos which have been recently taken are not misleading and show exactly how the hotel is currently with further work pending this year.

Clean room, big enough for the three of us. Staff were friendly and obliging.
Huge bar and dining area and although we did not eat at the hotel, the menu was quite impressive. Well patronised for breakfast and dinner.
Leisure facilities within the hotel consist of pools, spas, sauna and gym.
We also used the valet parking at $29.50 a night which is about average. No alternative really, meter parking prohibits parking in the street.
As other reviews have stated - the location can't be beaten. The hotel is within easy walking distance to all the main attractions eg. museums, brewery, beach and market. Within minutes you can also walk to the CBD with its many restaurants, pubs, bars etc.
Our two nights at The Esplanade was well worth the $250 per night (which we thought was reasonable), and particularly at the time of year we were there.

We spent a night here midweek on a special deal which included breakfast. We where really happy with our room, which overlooked the pool. Room was clean, and roomy, very happy.
Breakfast buffet was amazing, so many choices. Hotel is in great location, so it was easy for us to walk to everything we wished to do. We would go back for sure !!

We stayed here over Christmas and were just blown away by the warmth and hospitability of the staff. The Esplanade's central location in the heart of Fremantle is close to everything you need. The Cappuccino strip, seafood restaurants, pubs and wine bars, train station and the historic heart of Freo just minutes away. The hotel is comfortable and clean, laidback and relaxed. If you're looking for the perfect spot to relax, the Esplanade is a great choice. It's close enough to the Freo action if you need it but just far enough to chill on the verandah with a wine / beer and a book.

it was so pleasing to see you enjoyed your stay and the team added to your experience in Fremantle! The options around the hotel for various activities including the museums and historical tours etc even makes it more convenient...sitting on the vernada out the front of the hotel over looking the park, soaking up the sun and the sea breeze is a favourite pastime of our guests and how nice of you to point his out..

We love the Fremantle Esplanade hotel as the staff are so friendly and the hotel is just beautiful, there always seems to be a wedding or two happening when we visit which adds to the festivities, the food is always good especially as they have buffet meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner and there are other options too for eating in the Hotel, the rooms are always clean and spacious and with an extra payment of just under $30 you can have your car valet parked so you don't have to worry about it, you are in walking distance to all the clubs, pubs and restaurants and the markets etc, its one of our favourite places to stay when we get away from the country to enjoy the city life for a while.

Room Tip: We try to get a Park view room as we love to people watch and its a great place to sit on your veran...

My partner and I stayed here overnight as a getaway. I'd never been before and was surprised at the interior - from the outside I expected old world charm but instead the rooms are quite sterile and neutral. Very clean and comfortable (comfortable beds and pillows) but no soul or character - the empty hallways feel a bit like a prison. Watch out for the extra charge for valet parking, which they don't mention to you when you turn up in a car. Pool area was a bit tired - pool needed a clean and two of the spas were out of order. It's very central though and the breakfast buffet is amazing!! You can make your own juice and they will cook you an omelette in front of you. Worth it just for that.

Appreciate the review on the hotel and apologise that the valet failed to inform you of the cost as this is normal practice before they take the keys from he guest. The corridors are an ongoing project to paint an have new prints installed, as you may appreciate from when you were here they are long and there is a lot of them but we are working through it and those that have been completed are looking a lot more inviting. The rooms have also been identified for upgrading which we will do on a programed basis starting this year, since taking over the hotel in January last year we have upgraded the ground floor, resort pool area and a large number of back of house items that needed attention. It certainly is not an excuse for a satisfactory guest experience, however there was a long list to work through and we are doing everything on a prioritized basis to try to balance the guest experience as well as ensure plant and equipment is operational.

On arrival we were met by staff who insisted that they would bring our bags to our room - nice but un-necessary, especially as they were still downstairs 90 mins mater when we returned from a walk and coffee. With no one around I simply took the trolley and when we checked out five days later, still no one had asked me if we had our gear! First night (hot in Fremantle) the A/Con was hardly working and I was told we would have to wait 'till 8.00 am when the maintenance man would be back at work. Next morning I was offered a room change which although difficult (all packed up again) we were happy to accept. After being out for the day we came back around 4.00 and where given the keys to a new room. Trouble was - no bags! Took a very long time to find them - I think they had been put in the wrong room and with a shift change, no one knew where they were!!!

When leaving on Friday morning I told the Clerk I wanted to see someone more senior and after explaining our week and the number of times I had needed to visit the desk to complain we were offered a sincere apology and a heft discount off the bill. Will we go back? Yes. It is a great place to stay in a wonderful part of Fremantle. I just hope this is not going to happen again. I would rather pay full price and not have the anxiety interrupting a short but looked for break.

Room Tip: If you take a room overlooking the Park, only accept the 3rd or 4th floor otherwise noise from the B...

Was very disappointing to read of your experience with the valet team when staying here, I understand they were under the pump with the holiday guests through Jan, however this is no excuse for communication and following through with their procedures and process luggage as they should. I am glad your were compensated on departure and hopefully this will not occur when you return in the future, we generally get good reports on them from our guests.
