The picture shows the Brockman monument and the inscriptions illustrate how attitudes towards indigenous Australians have changed. The original monument describing the 19th century Brockman expedition that the local people attacked describe them as "treacherous blacks" and the whites as heroic explorers. The other side of the monument has a Nyoongar correction (the local people's version). The Esplanade also has a monument to the Portuguese community...near here are the fish restaurants started by the early Italian (Cicirello) and Greek (Kailis) families. Tourist heaven...and a short walk to Freo's cappuccino strip and markets....also lots of events happen here..many free.
