“Great Day Out”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 7, 2014

If you have a few days in Perth I can recommend a day out to Rottnest Island and a great way to get there is by the Rotness Express ferry. We went on New Year's Day and the services were very busy. As a result we sailed from Barrack St in Perth and back into Fremantle though that isn't much of a hardship as the train back to Perth is near the ferry terminal. The ferry runs slowly in the Swan River, during which free coffee and tea are available, but once out on the ocean it speeds up and can be quite bumpy so those of you who suffer motion sickness beware. Fares are not particularly cheap but they include the entrance fee to the island. You can buy a package which includes bike hire, scuba hire and other activities as well but these are also available to hire on the island. We hired bikes and did the circuit of the island. We saw a few Quokkas on the way round, one of which bit my daughter's finger, but there were more of them scavenging in the small settlement around the port. They are very cute but beware of those sharp teeth! The ferry times are 40 minutes from Fremantle and about two hours from Barrack St.

Dear Balix,

Great to hear you and your family had such a fantastic time exploring the both the Swan River and then Rottnest Island. With the Rottnest Island Quokka being the happiest animal in the world some visitors have a hard time refraining from feeding these cute little marsupials when they visit the island. Unfortunately this affects their natural behaviour and can cause Quokkas to try to taste anything offered to them and also start scavenging for scraps in the settlement area.

Thanks again for letting us know about your great day on Rottnest Island.

“Good Day Trip”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

Good ferry service but hire bicycles could do with more love and attention. Had to change one of three upfront as key was missing from lock. They were not smooth to operate and in my view unsuitable if you want to do the whole island in one day although with decent bikes it would be possible.

Dear Steve G.,

Thanks for taking the time to post your comments. Unfortunately the daily ocean crossings that the bikes have to endure can cause the keys to rattle out of the lock. Sorry about the inconvenience and glad to hear that our jetty bike crew were able to assist you before you headed off on your Rottnest adventure.

Thanks again and hope we get a chance to welcome you back soon.

“Well worth the trip”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2014

A group of four of us took the trip to Rottnest on the ferry. We had a good trip over and back, with none of us suffering any sickness. The staff on board were great, and on the lookout for any "sickies" to help them out. Unfortunately the company had no bikes left, so we had to hire bikes on the island which took some time. TIP- if you have to do this, book online because you get better bikes saved for you. Coming out of the Swan river there was a great commentary going on, but as the ferry was filled to maximum capacity, the middle rows had limited visibility. My suggestion would be to cut the dodgy commercial TV for half an hour and have a camera set up showing the interior passengers of the vessel what the commentary is about.

Hi VicNtony,

Thanks for the handy suggestion. It’s definitely best to pre-book bikes to ensure they’re waiting for you when you arrive on Rottnest Island so you can ride off to make the most of your day. It’s also great to hear that our crew were attentive to anyone feeling a little under the weather during the ocean crossing.

Hope you get to pay us another visit soon.

“Fast, clean and efficient”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 5, 2014 via mobile

We travel every year to Rottnest Island by ferry and this year it was one of the best trips. The fares are relatively expensive, but compared to other trips in Australia within the ballpark. Both going and returning trips were on time and very comfortable. We even had the luxury of watching the ashes cricket on large screen Tv's. Luggage and bike handling was very good and we have to say it is a great service compared to three years ago.

“Beware of the bikes”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 3, 2014

We went on Jan 2nd for the ferry & bike hire package.
The ferry transfer is fine, but the quality of the bikes they gave us was very bad, they were rusty, and one of them had defective gear, which is a problem in hilly Rottnest. If we had to go back we would only use the ferry transfer and book the bikes from another rental company on the island.

Dear Sar8a2013,

Thanks for the feedback and I apologize that the bike you were given was not of the high standard we expect. We are constantly maintaining our bike fleet from the peril of crossing the Indian Ocean daily and have actually just replaced a large portion of our fleet with brand new purpose-built Island Cruisers.

Hopefully we’ll get a chance to show you our new bikes next time your on Rottnest.
