The stay at The National in Fremantle was another highlight of my month long trip. A Heritage Hotel right in the center of this attractive historical town, in the corner of the two main streets: High and Market, thus with plenty of restaurants, breakfast places and all the main sights in walking distance.

By concidence I happened to be there on Nov 28th 2019, when the 'Freo Long Table Dinner' event takes place, with plenty of music and parading, of eating and merrymaking. When checking in the friendly lady at reception informed about this festivity and told me to participate. Since my room was facing High Street I saw that the hotel had provided ear plugs. In fact I didn't need them, since i had been out myself that night and everything got pretty quiet way before midnight.

There are only twelve rooms in this accomodation, distributed over two floors. From the hotel's fire escape plan I could see that all rooms were of different shape. Mine was No 12, not the largest, but with a well sized bathroom with a separate from the shower bathtub. It was also the hightest up and the only one facing the backside, just above High Street.

Just a few steps above my room was the fantastic rooftop bar with a 360 degrees view and very special drinks. Thus I enjoyed a 'Modern London Twist', a pink Gin with a slice of Grapefruit and a Rosemary branch. On the ground floor, but with a separate entrance than the one to the hotel is a more casual pub.

In addition to other reviews, the National has high quality rooms and is beautifully appointed. The service and cleanliness were exceptional. No request was too much. The managers' personal touch and helpfulness are also to be praised. The artwork on the staircase was nice, too.

We stayed in room 7, a gorgeous corner room on the third floor. Rooms on that floor don't have a veranda but the views over the rooftops in two directions were lovely.

The queen-sized bed was comfortable and the large shower was awesome. And yes, there was a view from the loo (it had louver blinds for privacy)!

The hotel provides earplugs for guests but we didn't need them, there was very little noise despite the central location. We had easy access to the Rottnest Ferry and heaps of bars and restaurants, plus of course the National Hotel’s rooftop bar.

The staff at reception were really friendly and helpful. The locally made natural soap and booklet on the history of the building were nice touches.

All in all, it was value for money and a great place to stay for 2 nights.

The National is a lovely old hotel in the centre of Fremantle. The accommodation is excellent. They have renovated the rooms beautifully and they are very comfortable and ours had a small balcony as well. Each room is unique and there only 12 rooms over the second and third floors. The only shortcoming of ours was the absence of a bath. The staff were very accommodating and helpful. There are bars on the ground floor and the roof although the latter is only open Thursday to Saturday and is very popular with the locals. Also a restaurant on the second floor, which serves reasonably interesting pub food. The bar downstairs is a typical Australian pub bar and there is live music most nights of the week, and meals are served from the same menu as the restaurant.

The hotel is in a great location with plenty of cafes and restaurants nearby. This is handy, as breakfast is not available. It is also walking distance to the port (for the ferry to Perth or Rottnest Is.) and train station, as well as attractions such as the Marine Museum and Little Creatures brewery.

On the downside, the area is noisy, especially on the weekend when there are people out late at night and the roof top and ground floor bars are full. Double glazing keeps some of it out and we slept fine. Also, there is no parking on site but the hotel can arrange this at a nearby garage, although at $25 day we managed with parking on the streets, which was unrestricted after 5:00, as we were out and about during the day mostly, anyway.

Room tip: All the rooms are different so choose carefully according to your preferences.
