Retreat is probably not the best word to describe Schutzenbach. It's more of a young people's kind of place, or somewhere for a family vacation. I stayed there while on a Topdeck tour.
Rooms are in wooden cabins with bunk beds. The rooms were clean and cosy (but be warned, it's more of a school trip type of place as opposed to a 'retreat'). Showers and toilets were separate from the cabins. The shared shower and toilet facilities are about 40 metres away from the cabins and you have to pay 1/2 a Swiss Franc for 5 minutes of hot water. The shower facilities were alright, not unbearably dirty, but obviously not hotel standard...just wear slippers in there and it's fine.
There's a nice bar within the compoud where there are parties most nights due to Topdeck tours passing through. Great atmosphere and the music wasn't too loud from outside so it didn't interrupt anyone's sleep. The shops and cafes in Lauterbrunnen are all within walking distance and the campsite has a little souvenir/convenience store in the compound. The only thing I didn't really like was that the cabin doors don't have locks at all so anyone can walk in...but apparently Lauterbrunnen is so safe and everyone there knows each other that locks aren't necessary.
All in all it was a pleasant stay and I would stay there again.
