Swiss Chalet

Review of Hotel Staubbach
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Sep 23, 2017
Hotel Staubbach is a creaky old chalet (as Rick Steves describes it) that is comfortable, clean and in the most spectacular location. It looks down the stunning Lauterbrunnen Valley, and faces the Staubbach Falls (lit up at night) which tumbles down the sheer cliff face. The hotel staff are wonderful, helpful, and friendly. The hiking in the area is spectacular, and is easily accessed by the gondolas. There is also a little cog train to take you up one side of the valley where you might get a stunning view of the Jungfrau.

Angie at the front desk was AWESOME! She explained all of the many hiking routes, prices of lifts and great tips to maximize our days! She helped make us dinner reservations (at a great restaurant - Camp Jungfrau). She couod not have been more helpful!!

Hotel was in a great location and the rooms were comfortable. Breakfast was good. Happy with our stay!!

Truly enjoyed our two-night stay at the Hotel Staubback in Lauterbrunnen. Our room was clean, comfortable, nicely decorated and a great view of the falls from our balcony. The staff is friendly and helpful.

This hotel is situated at the far end of the village from the train station (about a 5 min walk). We stayed for one night. After an excellent, informative welcome from Adam, we were given two rooms (a single and double interconnecting through the shower room) for our double room booking. We were delighted to have a 3rd floor corner aspect so stunning views of the valley and the waterfall (room numbers 29 and 30). The room had within it the most comprehensive and useful information pack not only about the hotel but about the village and area too, and is well worth a thorough read.

The furniture in the rooms is slightly dated, but the carpets looked new and everything was very clean. The shower was hot, and there are sinks with drinking water in each room.

The unique nature of this hotel, however, is in the generosity of the arrangements for making your own tea and coffee, heating up meals, storing food, and a lovely communal area with piano, games, PCs (intenret access), etc. We found this freedom a really welcome change after two weeks in a range of more traditional hotels.

Breakfast was generous and served in a lovely large conservatory with stunning views. We'd really strongly recommend this hotel.

We have only one negative. The hotel was built over a century ago and whilst this gives it lovely characteristics it also has very thin walls. Unfortunately for us the guest in the next room had a reflux cough which went on all night and prevented sleep. This obviously isn't the Hotel's fault, but is something to be aware of. Perhaps pack earplugs just in case.

We stayed 3 nights at Hotel Staubbach as we were exploring the region. We loved the location because we could get to both the Wengen and Murren areas easily. The staff could not have been more helpful with ideas about hikes, including how to access the trails. The breakfasts were wonderful and, on the day we had to leave early, there were some items available to us before the official breakfast time. This is not a fancy hotel but it was clean and had everything you need. While we were there, there was a Rick Steves tour staying in the hotel. We were very pleased with our stay and I would highly recommend it.
