My partner * I spent 3 nights early October 2012. It was very central to everything that we needed, railway to Jungfrau and some hiking. The breakfast's were fantastic, the staff were exceptional and our room, although a little small was fine. Would highly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting to stay in the Lauterbrunnen area.

We checked in to the Staubbach Hotel for 3 nights following a 7 day Rhine cruise from Amsterdam. We stayed early September but after drafting this review I left my computer in Europe and it has just been returned to me, hence the delay in posting.

We would rate this hotel as a comfortable 2 star or 3 star hotel. The staff are helpful and friendly. Marie, Nicolletta, Katrin and Angie all helped us out. A special thanks goes to Angie. We were concerned how much time it would take us to do the 3 separate trips to Basel Airport. Angie “went the extra mile”, checked it all out and provided us with a printout of all the necessary times and connections to suit our needs.

The room we had was a large corner room with a balcony and spectacular views of the mountains and waterfalls and to sit outside with a glass of wine watching the view and the base jumpers was a special treat.

Consult the hotel staff before committing to a 3 or 5 day rail pass. The weather forecasts are totally inaccurate and the weather totally unpredictable. Best to pay as you go as although fortunate enough to use our 3 day Jungfrau pass each day, we didn’t save anything over the pay as you go fares. If we had struck a wet day we’d have lost out on the deal. Also, the 2 men at the railway station selling tickets on the Sunday we arrived were the rudest and most aggressive 2 people we have met in Europe. We walked away from the first but the second was even worse.
When we asked if he could explain the pass entitlements to us he almost threw a brochure at us and stated “it is in there”. As they were the first people we dealt with in Switzerland they left us with a very poor first impression. Fortunately, the staff at all the other local villages were efficient and friendly.

Two return rail fares from Basel plus 2 x 3 day passes cost us 700 CHF but a ½ fare Swiss Rail pass wouldn’t have made it any cheaper. Expensive, but still worth it, especially when you take in to consideration the amazing engineering feat of building these railways through the mountains. A visit to Jungfrau is also well worth the fees , one visit was included with our pass and you get a lot for your money including an amazing tour through ice tunnels etc at the “top of Europe”. Murren and the Trummelback falls are not to be missed and another highlight was watching the base jumpers and paragliders dropping off the cliffs which happens all day long. The base jumpers are generally very interesting people though a bit of a hindrance in the hotel corridors which they used to repack their parachutes.

Breakfast at the Staubbach Hotel was OK, included bacon and eggs and fresh continental fare. A great personal touch was that the staff made sure they chatted to every guest at breakfast (especially Marie) and provided good advice on where to go, the weather forecasts and any other information guests might require. Percolated coffee is provided all day long, there is a comfortable lounge for guests and although there is no TV or fridge in the rooms guests can make use of the hotel units on the ground floor.

For each of our evening meals we went to the Oberland, where the food is excellent and pricing reasonable. Try one of their several “Rosti” dishes on the menu.

We stayed five nights at Hotel Staubbach and from the time we walked in the front door until we departed the staff were exceptional. Our greeting at reception was welcoming and friendly with all sorts of information about the local area and the Hotel. The breakfast choices were first class along with a warm welcome and asking our plans for the day and how we could be assisted. Our room was clean and the facilities for guests were excellent. Well done Hotel Staubbach staff! The Lauterbrunnen area offers many choices of things to do but walking through the Swiss country side is a must. The walk (downhill) from Murren to Gimmewald and also from Trummelbach Falls to Lauterbrunnen are a must.

Room Tip: A balcony room with a view to the Falls captures the natural beauty of Lauterbrunnen.

We stayed at Hotel Staubach for four nights in September. Our room was very comfortable, very clean, and had a balcony overlooking the mountains and the waterfall. The staff was very helpful and courteous, especially giving advice about the weather for visiting the moutains. The breakfast buffet was terrific. We would highly recommend Hotel Staubach to anyone visiting Lauterbrunnen.

Room Tip: We loved having the balcony and enjoyed the tea and coffee provided by the hotel on the balcony seve...

We loved Hotel Staubbach.....reminded me of years ago: simplicity, good service, dependability. Nothing fancy but then we trekked and gawked and rode trams and drank good beer and fell in love with the pristine world of mist, tumbling waterfalls, fat and happy cows, pleasant people and paths curving through green pastures. It was good for the soul and the hotel was as well. Our room faced the valley below on the third floor not facing the waterfall....quite ample and comfortable. We will definitely make this hotel our home base next year. Jackson Hole, WY

Awesome and authentic Swiss hotel experience!!

Staff are helpful and friendly. Price was great, even considering it was during August. If you want a good home base for hiking, then look no further. Try to book a room with views of the waterfall...even at night it is lit up and visible. Our room was small but fine for two of us and featured a spacious balcony with table and chairs. Very clean and interesting decor in common areas.

Breakfast was great!

Wifi was decent.

We stayed for three nights in this highly rated two star hotel. While we agree with others that the view was superb and the breakfast very good, we felt that it was not a good value. We had the most expensive room which is south facing. It was very small with armoire very close to bed, no luggage racks and no shelves in the bathroom. Our luggage was lined along the wall on the floor and our toiletries were also on the floor. For two of us, it was pretty cramped. Also there was no screening between balconies, which meant no privacy. Noise was also a problem. To us it was just not very comfortable.
